A dynamic global manufacturing organisation supplying a vast range of high performance fluid sealing products and associated knowledge-based services to virtually every industry sector. With state-of-the-art skills in materials technology, particularly relating to elastomers, polymers, composites and engineering plastics plus extensive expertise in precision machining of exotic alloys for metallic seals, and tension control fasteners for bolted joints. Our worldwide group of companies has 11 operations and a further 40 spread across Continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand, SE Asia, South Africa and the USA.
The Position
Reporting to the JW&Co Site Director and a member of the Executive Management team, this role will have overall responsibility of the successful management of manufacturing operations across the Cockermouth site involving toolmaking, compounding, extrusion, materials preparation, extrusion, moulding, finishing and inspection processes.
The role will require close co-operation with planning, configuration, customer service, purchasing and engineering functions to deliver high service levels to internal and external customers.
The role holder must actively engage in the drive to improve the HS&E performance of the business; embrace and support the development and implementation of continuous improvement and foster an employee engagement culture which visibly incorporates the values and behaviours of the business
Key responsibilities
- Ensure the workplace is safe, that safe systems of work are in place, compliance is maintained, accidents are promptly and thoroughly investigated, health and safety corrective and preventative actions are managed to closure and health and safety audit schedules are completed.
- Manage all manufacturing operations on site; toolmaking, compounding, extrusion, materials preparation, moulding, finishing and inspection processes.
- Set, measure and report clear KPIs aligned with the JW Group, JW SBU and JW&Co Strategic Plans focused around Quality, Cost, Delivery, Service and People Excellence and deliver continuous improvement of these KPIs.
- Ensure product meets customer requirements, satisfies specifications and is produced in compliance with the JW&Co Quality System.
- Provide strong and engaging leadership, recognise success, manage headcount, develop skills of managers and supervisors, ensure all employees receive appropriate training for their roles and ensure underperformance is effectively managed in line with company procedures and legislation.
- Build a quality, customer focused ethos promoting a ‘right first time, can do’ culture within the manufacturing departments.
- Work proactively and collaboratively with planning, configuration, customer service, purchasing and engineering functions to deliver high service levels to internal and external customers to consistently deliver OTIF above 90% and continuously improve customer service levels..
- Drive down costs by reducing waste, improving efficiencies, increasing automation and implementing best practice manufacturing techniques embracing a continuous improvement approach.

- Degree Qualified or equivalent in Sciences/Engineering/Manufacturing.
- Recognised Lean/CI qualification.
- Recognised H&S qualification.
- Working knowledge of materials compounding.
- Working knowledge of extrusion processes.
- Working knowledge of compression and injection moulding techniques.
