Main Duties of the Job

As the Head of Estates, you will have responsibility for managing the Blackpool Teaching Hospital estate and healthcare engineering infrastructure, and Atlas's community client locations, in a safe, compliant and comprehensive way.

You will possess strong leadership skills that positively contribute and influence the day-to-day operating of core services and actively explore opportunities to sustainably improve performance and effectiveness.

As a technical and designated senior operational manager, you will work with and manage multi-disciplinary teams to ensure service users and visitors are treated in safe and sustainable environments.

As a senior leader, you will actively contribute and influence the day-to-day operations and decision making with Atlas, providing well-considered solutions that support the cost-effective delivery of services.

You will be a vision-led individual with ambition and a strong desire to make a difference and help steer Atlas forwards to support the growth of the organisation as experts in healthcare facilities and property management in the North West.

Job Responsibilities

Whilst not exhaustive, the following duties represent an indication of the key duties and responsibilities expected of the post holder:

  • Take the lead on shaping the future provision of estates services at Atlas, including the strategic development of services to ensure they are high quality, progressive, responsive to internal and external demand, and fully support the strategic direction of the company.
  • Be responsible for the development and implementation of the ongoing long-term Atlas Estates Strategy and the associated delivery plan, ensuring that any related financial and estates management resources are correctly planned and prioritized.
  • Use technical and professional building and engineering expertise to support the reconfiguration and integration of various services associated with the overall Atlas Estates Strategy.
  • Support the company’s annual business planning process, including the production of appropriate estate plans.
  • Liaise with Senior Leadership Team (SLT) colleagues to ensure that any estates management implications arising from business plans developed within other services are identified and resourced.
  • Research and develop the latest estate management strategies and practices and implement new methods of working throughout the Company.
  • Ensure full liaison with colleagues from capital and property teams to effectively manage the interface between operational, building and engineering matters and capital investment projects.
  • Ensure that all minor building and engineering projects are procured, designed, and managed to comply with all Atlas Standing Orders and relevant health and safety guidelines.
  • Take responsibility to ensure that pre and post tender documentation is evaluated using analytical knowledge and criteria to interpret project submissions.
Person SpecificationEducation / Qualifications
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline (e.g., architecture, building services, engineering, facilities management, surveying).
  • Postgraduate and/or professional qualifications in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience at a senior level.
  • Current professional registration with a relevant professional body (e.g., CIBSE, IHEEM).
  • Evidence of post-qualifying and continuing professional development.
  • Prince 2 project management qualification or equivalent.
  • MBA.
Knowledge & Experience: General
  • The ability to think strategically and develop plans.
  • Experience of working within a complex environment, managing relationships with multiple stakeholders.
  • Good competence using Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • High standard of written skills, evident in report writing.
  • Good information presentation skills, evident in graphics and report design.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex information to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to interpret and understand complex statistics and sensitive information.
  • Ability to monitor complex contracts.
Knowledge & Experience: Specialist
  • Detailed knowledge and proficiency in estates computer management systems (e.g., BMS, CAFM).
  • Experience managing a large multi-disciplinary Estates service within a comparable environment.
  • Successful track record of negotiating Estates & Facilities services contracts.
  • Knowledge of legislation relating to Estates and Facilities management.
  • Experience in managing estates construction, maintenance, and physical assets.
  • Achievement in successful change management and project management.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety and fire safety legislation and good practices.
  • Understanding of NHS property & Estates related guidance.
  • Excellent knowledge of statutory/regulatory returns such as ERIC and PAM.
