Interim Chief Retail Operations Officer (Weekly commute required)

Reporting to: CEO

Compensation: c£200K Basic (Negotiable) on a fixed term contract basis or equivalent day rate.

Direct Reports: Head of Retail Operations, Head of e-Commerce

A highly reputable food retail business with a strong community focus is seeking an experienced Chief Retail Operations Officer (CROO) to oversee all aspects of its retail divisions. About the Role:

As the Chief Retail Operations Officer, you will play a pivotal role in defining and executing the retail strategy of the organisation. Your focus will be on driving sales, improving operational efficiencies, and fostering a high-performance culture across all retail channels, including food, care, and e-commerce. You will work closely with the CEO, Executive Leadership Team (ELT), and Board of Directors to ensure the continued growth and profitability of the business.


Responsibilities:

  • Lead all retail operations, ensuring financial targets and operational excellence are met across multiple business units.
  • Drive strategic initiatives to maximise retail profitability, sales growth, and cost control.
  • Build a strong, values-based culture aligned with the organisation’s mission to make a positive impact on the communities it serves.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Executive Officer and other senior leaders to develop long-term strategies and innovative retail solutions.
  • Oversee the implementation of operational systems, KPIs, and performance targets, ensuring consistent delivery of high standards.
  • Foster an environment of employee development, engagement, and loyalty, ensuring the organization’s values are embedded across all operations.
  • Take accountability for risk management and compliance, ensuring all areas of responsibility adhere to internal policies and external regulations.
  • Champion the organisation’s community and environmental initiatives, aligning them with business goals.


Required Skills:

  • Extensive experience in retail operations leadership, ideally with a focus on multi-site or e-commerce operations. Previous Food/Grocery Retail experience is essential.
  • A demonstrable background in successful change, turnaround / transformation.
  • Strong business and financial acumen, with the ability to drive profitability while maintaining the highest standards of service.
  • A strategic thinker who is also hands-on and capable of managing day-to-day operational challenges in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills, with a commitment to employee development and engagement.
  • Experience working at the executive level, collaborating with senior leadership and boards to drive organisational success.
  • Strong understanding of the retail landscape, with a passion for community-driven initiatives and sustainable practices.
