An exciting opportunity has become available for a highly motivated, innovative and experienced Speech and Language Therapist to join the team of AHP leads within our Planned Care Division. This newly created post is the result of an organisation redesign focused on improving the clinical voice in the trust.
We are looking for an individual who is motivated to deliver safe, high-quality care to children, young people, and families in Brighton and Hove and West Sussex. Collaborative working across the services in the interest of children and young people is actively encouraged, to share best practice and make efficient use of resources.
Excellent communication skills and understanding of partnership working are essential for this post. We are open to discussion with the successful candidate about whether they wish to continue to carry out clinical sessions and their particular area of clinical interest.
Main duties of the job
The Deputy Clinical Head of Service will provide strong professional clinical leadership support and specialist clinical advice across the services within their portfolio.
The role will support the Clinical Head of Service and will be a visible and accessible presence for their teams. The post holder will support the Head of Service and Clinical Heads of Service to continually improve equitable patient care, experience, access and outcomes and assist with the implementation of national and Trust initiatives.
The post holder will support the Clinical Head of Service in developing the service to meet the population's needs and to ensure services provide safe, effective, personalised and evidence-based clinical interventions and holistic care.
The post holder will be a role model for leadership, training, coaching, and facilitating staff development at all levels. The post holder will be expected to provide a clinical perspective on pathways within their portfolio and support the implementation within the modernisation and changing environment of all service areas.

Job description
Job responsibilities
- To lead the clinical team leads of the relevant services and provide professional and clinical leadership to the teams in their portfolio, to ensure that all clinical staff are appropriately managed and are clinically and professionally developed so that they are, therefore, efficient, effective, engaged and highly motivated.
- To provide robust assurance to the Clinical Head of Service for quality governance within their portfolio to demonstrate safe and effective care.
- Implement the Trust's clinical priorities and strategies ensuring clinical staff are engaged and connected to the objectives and plans as delegated by the Clinical Head of Service.
- Maintain a highly visible and accessible leadership profile and, through the provision of effective leadership, enable clinical change and service improvement for teams in their portfolio.
- Lead and promote an open learning culture which facilitates speaking up and listening up.

Experience
Essential
- Experience in a leadership role including contributing to operational management of services
- Experience in management of health services
- Experience of monitoring, analysing and assessing clinical operational performance
- Experience of drafting, implementation and monitoring of remedial action plans.
- Experience in drafting service level business plans, local standard operating procedures and policies.
- Experience of staff management, including recruitment and retention of staff, performance management, and managing sickness absence, and misconduct.
- Experience of managing staff including appraisal and personal development planning.
- Experience of partnership working with a wide range of statutory and non-statutory service providers
- Experience of assessing risks across clinical services and developing risk management plans.
- Experience of managing multi-disciplinary teams.
- Experience of business and operational planning.
Knowledge and skills
Essential
- Knowledge of Human Resource Policies and Procedures.
- Knowledge of clinical and operational governance and its application to services.
- Knowledge of multidisciplinary team working and an understanding of differing professional roles boundaries.
- Knowledge of clinical operational processes, including budget management, target setting, and action planning and performance management.
- Ability to monitor and maintain standards of care within clinical services.
- Ability to identify, assess and manage clinical and operational risks.
- Able to translate complex information to make it meaningful to staff at all levels and across all professions both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to occasionally manage distressing and emotional circumstances with staff, patients and their carers.
- Ability to engage stakeholders through discussion, presentation and direct liaison.
- Excellent time management, prioritisation and organisational skills and ability to manage and deliver to agreed deadlines.
- Able to work as part of a team, using own and others skills and adopting a coaching style to drive individual and organisational performance.
Qualification and/or Professional registration
Essential
- Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional - Relevant to the clinical areas within the portfolio
- Postgraduate qualification in management or equivalent level of knowledge acquired through experience.
- Evidence of continuous professional/leadership/management development.
