The Bar Council is the voice of the barrister profession representing and supporting the nearly 18000 barristers in England and Wales and championing the rule of law and access to justice.Our Legal Practice and Remuneration team is two Policy Analysts working with the Head of Policy. This opportunity is to fill one of the Policy Analyst roles.Specific responsibilities will include:1. Civil/family legal aidTo develop expertise in civil and family legal aid fee schemes for barristers. To use this expertise to engage with the Legal Aid Agency (LAA) and Ministry of Justice (MoJ). Sometimes you will use your expertise to draft a Bar Council consultation response sometimes you will gather expert input from barristers and clerks who specialise in these areas.2. CriminalTo be a resource to provide the executive of projects related to criminal legal aid and criminal justice policy more generally.3. Privately funded remunerationDevelop understanding of matters such as Fixed Recoverable Costs and Conditional Fee Agreements so as to engage with the Ministry of Justice and Civil Procedure Rules Committee.4. Alternative Dispute ResolutionTo be the Executive of the Legal Services Committees ADR Panel including drafting agendas writing papers and minutes and progressing work between meetings.5. Direct AccessTo be the Executive of the Legal Services Committees Direct Access Panel including drafting agendas writing papers and minutes and progressing work between meetings.6. Ethical EnquiriesDevelop expertise in the Bar Standards Board Handbook and answer telephone and email Ethical Enquiries from barristers regarding their code of conduct responsibilities.Strong and effective working relationships with barristers on committees and with external stakeholders are essential so strong organisational communication and stakeholder management skills are required.You should be degree qualified or have equivalent experience ideally in law although that is not essential. You should have experience of policy issues within a similar organisation (including drafting policies and dealing with consultation responses) and be able to command the attention and respect of Bar leaders Bar Council Officers and individual members of staff. Knowledge of policy issues of interest to the Bar and a commitment to delivering high quality work and excellent communication and stakeholder management skills are also sought.For more information about this role please refer to the attached JD.
