Darlington, United Kingdom HM TREASURY-1 Full time

Are you interested in playing a pivotal role in a high-profile area with analytical challenge that offers an exciting opportunity to be involved in the decision making that affects the whole of the UK? If so, then we want to hear from you

About the Team

We are a friendly team of outstanding analysts and policy makers located across London and Darlington offices. We seek to bring together an understanding and advise on policy development related to households’ living standards, distributional analysis across different financial and demographic characteristics, and labour market outcomes. The work is at the centre of the government’s priorities to boost growth and overcome obstacles to opportunity.

About the Job

In this role, you will:

  • Lead a team of around six analysts, supporting their stretching development, ensuring their work is robust and of high quality, and playing a leadership role to support the wider-organisation.
  • Communicate analysis effectively, ensuring that the work of the team is clear and influential with different audiences, including Ministers.
  • Develop and deliver an analytical work programme that can inform policy decisions, ensuring the plan is timely, relevant, and well communicated.
  • Analyse and advise on specific policy questions as needed, sometimes at pace and bringing to bear a range of analytical techniques.
  • Oversee maintenance and strategic development of the team’s key models, including expanding the use of data science techniques and developing new models to answer critical questions for policy making. Working knowledge of SAS, R or similar software is highly advantageous.
  • Building positive relationships across Treasury, other departments, external organisations, and beyond, ensuring our work and modelling capability is robust, relevant to and influences policy development and wider narrative. Our work provides an attractive blend of high-profile cross-cutting policy thinking and detailed analytical challenge

About You

This role would perfectly suit an analyst looking to stretch their analytical capability whilst working close to the centre of government. You will need a proven track record in delivering robust analysis and ability to identify strategic policy implications. You will also have the ability to lead an analytical team to deliver high quality and strategically important analysis through periods of uncertainty or high pressure. Building relationships and communicating complex analysis clearly and persuasively to our partners is key.

Some of the Benefits our people love

  • 25 days annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years), plus 8 public holidays and the King’s birthday (unless you have a legacy arrangement as an existing Civil Servant). Additionally, we operate flexitime systems, allowing employees to take up to an additional 2 days off each month
  • Flexible working patterns (part-time, job-share, condensed hours)
  • Generous parental and adoption leave packages
  • Access to a generous Defined Benefit pension scheme with employer contributions of 28.97%
  • Access to a cycle-to-work salary sacrifice scheme and season ticket advances
  • A range of active staff networks, based around interests (e.g. analysts, music society, sports and social club) and diversity
