Principal Power Electronics Design Engineer (senior / principal)

This is a senior role that will require experience of working directly with customers, technically leading projects and teams, and architecting innovative power electronic solutions to solve complex problems and challenges within the e-mobility space.


Working in a customer centric organisation you will be involved with taking power electronics designs from concept (blank page) to optimised prototype for electric vehicle / e-mobility applications. Based in Leamington Spa.


More: Principal Power Electronics Design Engineer. The role could suit a senior / principal engineer with significant and relevant industry experience. Candidates should have:

  • communication skills (used to working directly with customers)
  • track record in the design of power electronics (power inverters or switch mode power supplies (SMPS)) or automotive EV projects or similar
  • of designing digital and mixed signal control and interface circuit design would be required.
  • of PCB layout using tools such as Altium, etc, would be required.
  • of inverters / SMPS for vehicle electrification, motor control, e-mobility projects.
  • technical leadership, project leading and product architecture experience.


This role requires extensive previous experience of power electronics design but also experience of PCB layout. Engineers should be able to take products through the design lifecycle to validated prototype and this includes design of PCBs.


In this role you will be involved with taking customer projects (electric vehicle propulsion / motor control modules) from concept to prototype. This means being able to develop systems from scratch, bringing solutions up through hardware integration and lab testing to form validated prototypes ready for customer handover.


The company is involved with the design of electric drivetrain systems for automotive electric vehicle and other e-mobility domains. They are open to considering power electronics engineers from other domains. Of course, those aligned to similar applications (e.g., variable speed drives, DC-AC traction motors, PMSM control, DC-DC converters, etc) would be preferred.


Required experience / skills: Principal Power Electronics Design Engineer

  • Strong academic background (degree / master’s degree in electrical, electronic engineering, etc)
  • Excellent communication skills (used to working directly with customers)
  • Experience of technically leading projects and people.
  • Track record in the design of power electronics (power inverters or switch mode power supplies (SMPS)) for automotive EV projects or similar e-mobility programmes (marine / aerospace), perhaps OBC or DC-DC converters.
  • Track record of designing digital and mixed signal control and interface circuits
  • Experience of PCB layout using tools such as Altium, etc.
  • Experience of inverter / SMPS design for vehicle electrification, motor control, or similar would be preferred.
  • Good practical engineering aptitude including the development of power electronics hardware in a lab, rig and vehicle environment for demanding applications.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, customer centric environment.
  • Evidence of product architecture, innovation and creative problem solving for relevant engineering projects.

  • Ability to work with mechanical design teams to develop designs into full working prototypes.
  • Experience of thermal management / cooling of power electronics systems would be great.
  • Experience in the safe use of high power, high voltage test equipment up to 1MW and 800V DC


This is a senior role that will require experience of working directly with customers, technically leading projects and teams, and architecting innovative power electronic solutions to solve complex problems and challenges within the e-mobility space. Experience of automotive, marine, aerospace or other vehicle electrification / motor control product development would be preferred.


This Principal Power Electronics Design Engineer role is based onsite (hybrid working could be considered) and is commutable from Birmingham. Redditch, Solihull, Nuneaton, Hinckley, Leamington Spa, Banbury, Daventry, Rugby, Coventry and Lutterworth. Salary is negotiable.
