Global’s regional newsrooms across the UK are looking to expand their pool of freelance broadcast journalists, from reporters with a hunger for original content and breaking news, to newsreaders for our local Heart, Capital and Smooth radio brands.

We’re eager to hear from journalists with a great voice and bags of enthusiasm. Relevant training will be provided.

You’ll have a passion for news, be willing to work weekend shifts, and not be afraid of responding to breaking news stories within a newsroom setting. Our freelance requirements vary, and any offer of work would be on a casual basis.

3 best things about the job

Working on some of the UK’s biggest and most exciting radio stations with a team of talented and hard-working journalists.

No two days are the same: you’ll be working on a variety of local and national stories.

The opportunity to create unique and exclusive content both on-air and online.

Measures of success –

In the first few months, you would have:

Grasped the news agenda and produced stand-out content for Global’s newsroom.

Established yourself as a trusted member of the team.

Sourced and produced original, exclusive content.

Developed a full understanding of the different Global brands

Improved and developed as a Broadcast Journalist.

Responsibilities of the role

Delivering standout, Ofcom-compliant bulletins/reports which routinely meet and exceed Global standards.

You’ll help set the on-air agenda whilst on shift.

You’ll have sound legal judgement and be well-versed in Ofcom’s broadcast regulations and guidelines.

You’ll understand the importance of the full range of social and multi-media tools available in delivering a successful multi-platform news experience for our audiences.

You’ll understand the importance of developing relationships with key contacts across our region.

You’ll have the flexibility to tackle both bulletin reading and reporting shifts as required.

What you will need

The ideal candidate will be proactive and willing to develop and implement innovative solutions, capable of the following:

A relevant journalism qualification including a legal understanding and, preferably, experience in a newsroom, working on bulletins.

An understanding of the importance of bespoke content across our brand portfolio and be capable of taking responsibility for editorial decisions with those diverse audiences in mind.

You will be confident working on your own and under the guidance of your Senior colleagues to provide on-target, agenda-setting, news content.

You will be passionate about news, and eager to investigate and create your own unique and exclusive stories

Ideally, you will have experience of producing and presenting news bulletins.

You will enjoy working flexible hours and always strive to complete a task to a high standard.

A knowledge and understanding of the key issues affecting the lives of people in our regions in which you are based

Be able to respond to changing situations and problem-solving under pressure, and ensure our output is always of the highest standard in all circumstances.
