TheInternational Economic Partnerships (IEP) Team leadson the bilateral economic relationships with priority internationalpartners. We promote and protect HM Treasury's interestsinternationally working to support UK domestic prosperity andensure UK influence on the global economic landscape. The team issplit into the Americas and Emerging Markets Unit and the Europeand Asia-Pacific Unit. This role sits within the first of theseunits.


Aboutthe Job

The role is responsiblefor developing HM Treasury’s strategy for the US economicrelationship and delivering on that including through set-pieceministerial and senior official engagements. You will work closelywith teams around HM Treasury, the British Embassy in Washington,the US Embassy in London, and others. Now is a particularlyfascinating time to work on our US relationship in the context ofthe forthcoming US Presidential and Congressional elections inNovember. The role also supports on the Canada and Mexico bilateralrelationships.


KeyAccountabilitiesinclude:

  1. Shape and ownHM Treasury’s engagement and policy strategy for the United States,working across HM Treasury teams and other government departmentsto create and ensure wider buy-in to a collective economicstrategy. Advise seniors and ministers on this strategy; and ensureit actively accounts for and delivers on HM Government strategicobjectives.
  2. Feed into senior level thinking onwider international strategy. Deliver on PM and Chancellorpriorities, advising ministers on policy and objectives, anddriving forward overall strategic aims through delivering highquality on the ground Chancellor trips, events and engagement.
  3. External representation of HM Treasury tointernational partners, identifying strategic priorities for the UKeconomy, providing high quality advice to senior ministers, anddelivering positive policy outcomes through the UK/US relationship.
  4. Management of regular economic and politicalreporting to inform domestic policy making and create strategicjoin up, and ensuring the branch is the centre of US expertise inorder to inform UK policy.

AboutYou

The post holder will need tohave a good grasp of economics (but doesn’t need to be aneconomist) as the US’ centrality in the global economic andfinancial system is key to the role’s context. You need to be ableto juggle multiple projects simultaneously, work to tight deadlineswith a range of stakeholders, see how your work connects to theTreasury’s wider domestic and international objectives, and be ableto represent the UK with externals.
