The Role and the Department

The Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences is a global leader across a range of sport and physical activity domains and we are proud to be ranked 5th for Sports Science in the Complete University Guide 2025. We have recently moved to new premises in Durham City, where we enjoy a suite of offices, flexible meeting and research spaces, and a new laboratory and nutrition kitchen. We also have laboratories at the Sports and Wellbeing Park at Maiden Castle where we work alongside the University's sporting arm, Team Durham. Durham was named Sports University of the Year in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023 and has been ranked in the top 3 universities by BUCS since 2012.

The post holder will be responsible for assisting with the day-to-day technical functions and operations in the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences, providing technical support to staff and students to ensure the safe and effective delivery of teaching on our undergraduate and post-graduate degree programmes and facilitating world-leading research activities. The post holder will provide assistance across both sites in a wide range of activities in Sport and Exercise Science disciplines including public engagement, consultancy support and community outreach. The post holder will be required to provide flexible technical support as part of a technical team supporting all teaching, research and outreach activities conducted within the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences

Your application should cover the following criteria:

Essential Criteria:
A sport and exercise science degree, or a degree/equivalent qualification in a relevant related discipline.Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong digital competence with demonstrable skills in using core digital tools including internet, email, digital communication tools, Microsoft 365 applications, digital booking system, project planning. Five GCSE's at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics (or equivalent experience). Experience of working in a team. Knowledge and expertise with the application of skills to create, build and construct resources, tools and equipment to meet teaching and research outputs. Experience of working within a laboratory environment with an understanding of the operation of general laboratory equipment.
Desirable Criteria:
    • Masters degree (or equivalent qualification / experience) in sport and exercise science or related degree.
    • Evidence of continuing professional development.
    • Ability to solve problems and resolve issues, plan solutions and make pragmatic decisions.
    • Demonstrable ability to provide advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues.
    • Ability to effectively network and exchange advice and information for development purposes.
    • Experience of monitoring activities of self and others to ensure health and safety regulations are adhered to.
    • Experience of working in a sport/exercise laboratory setting in either a research, teaching or exercise testing/consultancy-based role or experience working in an analytical laboratory setting.
    • Recognised health and safety qualification (e.g., NEBOSH)

Service Delivery
  • Plan and organise own workload with or without involvement with project work streams.

Teaching and Learning Support
  • Record, monitor and collate information, analyse patterns and trends as part of teaching, learning and research activities.
  • Develop, construct and/or repair mechanical, electrical, electronic and digital equipment and tools, under the supervision of more experienced staff.
  • Deliver professional technical and experimental services to undergraduates, postgraduates, research assistants and academic staff to support teaching, outreach, research and learning activities to meet sector and professional body standards.
  • Provide demonstrations and instruction on various laboratory techniques and practices and the operation of particular equipment to others outside the team.
  • Provide supervision for teaching, learning and research activities, including students and staff.
  • Ensure the smooth running of a teaching or research facility and/or a range of laboratories, workshops, studios and/or experimental facilities, maintaining facilities to a safe standard for student use.
  • Apply knowledge and skills to build, adapt, construct and repair test set-ups, experimental scenarios and laboratory equipment for demonstration lectures.
  • Utilise new and existing resources to deliver teaching, research and/or learning objectives.
  • Prepare and set-up equipment and facilities for the delivery of teaching, learning and research activities, including various outreach activities and summer schools.

Teamwork
  • Act as more knowledgeable team member without responsibility for team members.
  • Contribute to collaborative decision making within the team with service provision to deliver an excellent stakeholder experience in accordance with policy and procedures.
  • Collaborate with team members and academic staff to implement service alterations and plan the future development of laboratories.
