Job summary

Background�

The CPTPP team is responsible for ensuring the UK plays its full role as a member of the Comprehensive and Progressive agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), one of the Prime Minister�s top trade priorities.��

The team covers supporting UK engagement in CPTPP Ministerial level and Senior Official level meetings and the work to prepare for that, ensuring we play an active role as a signatory of CPTPP. This includes through participating in the General Review of the agreement, and in Trade Committees, contributing to work on future CPTPP accessions, our approach to public and stakeholder engagement, and preparations towards implementation, including on Parliamentary business and legislation. We expect CPTPP to enter into force for the UK in 2024, however we are already fully engaged in CPTPP-wide meetings in advance of that.�

The Role�

We are looking for a driven candidate to support on UK delivery of this high-priority plurilateral trade agreement.��

The successful candidate would be joining to work in CPTPP but may in time support on other priority elements of HMG�s FTA programme, in particular the UK�s FTA negotiation programme with Mexico.�

This role would be ideal for you if you have a keen interest in international affairs and are looking for your next challenge. You will be supporting in managing a crucial element of the Prime Minister and Secretary of State�s foreign policy priorities.��

There may also be opportunities to deputise for the line manager, as well as potential opportunities for international travel.

Job description

The exact scope of the role will depend on the current priorities when you join, but it is likely to involve some or all of the following:��

CPTPP UK Secretariat � supporting the UK�s position as an active CPTPP Member. This will include input into preparing for CPTPP ministerial and senior level meetings, requiring significant international engagement with partners, as well as policy drafting and analysis of technical documents. There may also be opportunities to brief ministers where relevant.�Cross-Government working - developing strong relationships with a number of DBT teams, including our Bilateral Trade Relations teams and Ministerial Private Offices. Also, significant work with other departments across Government, notably FCDO, Cabinet Office and Defra.�International Engagement � developing strong relationships with our Embassies and High Commissions in CPTPP countries, and their host Governments, providing updates and clear steers, contributing to briefings and to other products as relevant.�Supporting on wider pieces of work within the team � such as parliamentary activity and communications announcements at key moments.

Essential criteria�

You will need to have:�

Experience of working in a fast-paced team to deliver a project.�Effective policy and strategy skills, with the ability to analyse complex issues and find creative solutions.�Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with a range of colleagues across an organisation and beyond, and collaborate with these stakeholders to share information, resources and support.�

Desirable criteria �

Experience working on international trade negotiations or experience having worked with international partners.�
