Forestry England are delighted to be working exclusively with Allen & York to recruit for the inspirational and unique role of Curator at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum. This is a remarkable opportunity to be the guardian of Forestry England�s historic tree collection, nurturing and preserving the diverse beauty of over 15,000 specimens.

The successful candidate will lead the tree team and its associated activities. You�ll also be a member of the arboretum�s senior leadership team where you�ll collaborate with other senior leaders to help set direction for the arboretum and promote cross team working.

With your artistic instinct and knowledge of woody plants, you�ll collaborate with professionals locally and globally, connecting people with trees to improve the quality of life.

You�ll hold a relevant professional qualification to level 6 (degree level or chartered membership) with comprehensive experience of working at a curatorial level or you will have sufficient experience in a Curatorial level role within an arboreta, botanic garden or similar. With extensive knowledge and understanding of planning, you�ll be skilled in applying current best practice to maintaining and developing a botanical collection and conservation techniques. An inspiring leader, you�ll have a successful track record of performance management with the ability to develop and support teams, creating a collaborative culture. An excellent communicator, you�ll be confident inspiring others and representing Forestry England throughout the UK and internationally in a range of different settings.

A Masters level qualification in botany, horticulture, arboriculture, forestry or similar would be advantageous to this role.

Job description

You will be a member of the arboretum�s senior leadership team reporting directly to the Director. You will collaborate with other senior leaders including the Friends leadership team to help set direction for the arboretum and promote cross team working.

You will curate the living tree collection and historic landscape.� You will oversee accessioning and planting decisions as custodian of our picturesque landscape for generations to come. You will have extensive knowledge of woody plants, an eye for beauty in a landscape, and the ability to bring these together in making key aesthetic decisions.

You will be an active member of the national and international botanical community. The Curator has responsibility for co-ordinating the UK Botanic Garden and Arboretum Collections Consortium for the purpose of coordinating international wild seed collecting activity. You will be a member of the UK Curators� Forum which consists of curators and heads of horticulture from across the leading institutions, designed to provide advice and share best practice. Forestry England�s tree collections also include Bedgebury National Pinetum which houses the most complete collection of conifers in the world, in addition there are smaller collections spread throughout the country. The Curator is the lead professional for these collections and chairs a joint curatorial forum with colleagues from Bedgebury Pinetum and Forest Research.

Key responsibilities

Leadership:

Lead and inspire the tree team ensuring it is well resourced and motivated.Contribute to the Westonbirt senior leadership team promoting cross team working and collaboration with the Friends Charity.

Strategic planning:

Responsibility for policies and plans that guide the curation of the living tree collection and historic landscape, developing these plans in the context of climate change and improving biodiversity and social value.Oversee completion of development of the national arboreta tree conservation strategy that provides for engagement and funding opportunities and contribute to wider arboretum development plans.

Operational delivery:

Ensure technical excellence in curation of the tree collection and landscape, maintaining the picturesque ideals and providing a world class setting for the visitor experience.Ensure tree safety and that operations comply with high standards of health, safety, biosecurity and are compliant with the Nagoya Protocol.Help deliver elements of engagement activities including talks and guided tours, and alongside others assist with duty management and other tasks.

Collaborations:

Lead the joint curatorial forum for Forestry England�s arboreta, ensuring the collections are an effective resource for learning, science and research.Co-ordinate the work of the UK Botanic Garden and Arboretum Collections Consortium and contribute to the UK curators� forum, sharing skills and knowledge.Develop contacts across the UK and internationally that are relevant to the work of Forestry England and the arboretum�s vision.

Person specification

Essential experience

Team leadership skills and track record of performance management; ability to develop, and support teams and create a collaborative culture.Experience working at a curatorial level within an arboreta, botanic garden, or similar environment/role.Substantial knowledge and understanding of planning, applying current best practice to maintaining and developing a botanical collection and conservation techniques.An effective communicator with experience in using a range of communications strategies, methods, and media; able to give clear and reliable advice to various internal and external audiences.Able to provide proactive strategic leadership and input to various internal and external groups, inspiring others to partner and contribute towards the Vision. Able to represent Westonbirt throughout the UK and internationally in a range of different settings.Successful track record of managing resources including staff, financial and facilities, and preparing and managing budgets.Managing health, safety, and biosecurity; relevant best practice and compliance.

Desirable

Qualified to Masters level in botany, horticulture, arboriculture, forestry or similar discipline.

Required qualification

A relevant professional qualification to level 6 (degree level or chartered membership) or, a very significant level of experience operating at curatorial level.
