About the Role

In this role you will support the Managing Editor of the Nucleic Acids Research portfolio, comprising Nucleic Acids Research , NAR Genomics and Bioinformatics , NAR Cancer , and NAR Molecular Medicine , to ensure that the journals are published in a smooth and timely manner and to a high standard. You will also be providing support to the Editors-in-Chief and Associate Editors. Additionally, you will provide in-house editorial expertise as required to support other OUP journals.

Responsibilites:

Editorial Office Oversight
  • Under the supervision of the Managing Editor (ME), to oversee the peer review process for manuscripts submitted to the NAR journals: liaising with authors, reviewers, Editors and OUP.
  • Monitor journal inboxes and submission systems.
  • Work with the ME where required to efficiently log and offer support during the investigation of ethical issues following COPE guidelines until resolution.

Workflows, processes, and system
  • Provide support to external Editors: re-inviting referees, chasing late referees, sending reminders to Editors.
  • Prepare journal and portfolio level reporting as and when required.
  • Work with the ME to assess, improve, and maintain accurate and efficient workflows for all journal processes.

Editorial Team Support
  • Liaising with key stakeholders within OUP, including Production staff and suppliers as necessary.
  • Answer Editors' questions on the submission system and peer review administration.
  • Assist Editorial leadership with building and maintaining the Editorial Board.
  • Prepare data for and attend journal editorial board meetings, and additional meetings as required.

Communication and Reporting
  • Prepare regular Editorial reports on various KPIs for the journal.
  • Prepare reports to track performance of Editorial board members.
  • Sending external communications on behalf of the NAR journals and its Editors.

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

About You

This is a great role for someone who wants to move from academic research (preferably in a relevant discipline) to publishing and offers the opportunity to stay connected with science and scientists in the wider academic landscape. Skills -

Essential:
  • Degree in a relevant scientific subject, or equivalent skills and experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of the academic research ecosystem, including familiarity with publication practices
  • Excellent organizational, time management and prioritisation skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Keen eye for details and ability to follow processes and workflows to a high level of accuracy

Desirable:
  • Prior experience with utilising online submission systems
  • Some experience working in scientific publishing or in a related industry
