The Role and Department

The Faculty of Science is one of Durham University's four Faculties and is home to a diverse community of staff and students across eight academic departments: Biosciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Mathematical Sciences, Physics and Psychology. The Faculty is also responsible for running the broad-ranging undergraduate Natural Sciences Degree Programme and the Postgraduate Master of Data Science programmes. It is home to over 1,000 staff and 7,000 students.

Durham University's Science Transformation Programme proposes a 10-year plan for investment in the Faculty of Science with the aim of building upon Durham's strong fundamental science research portfolio through the development of new focussed translational research activity, that will help increase income, strengthen pathways to impact and ultimately increase international reputation. The Programme will involve a series of interdependent projects and initiatives including investment in infrastructure and facilities; strategic appointment of staff in key research areas; and development of new ways of working to strengthen internal interdisciplinary collaboration and partnerships with external stakeholders.

In collaboration with the Faculty Leadership team, the Deputy Faculty Manager will support and drive the strategic aims and objectives of the Faculty, including contribution to elements of the Science Transformation Programme. This is a newly created position, establishing a senior Professional Services leadership team within the Faculty Office of the Faculty Manager and two Deputy Faculty Managers (one of who is already in place).

Within the Science Transformation Programme Portfolio, this role will primarily focus on projects relating to research and infrastructure, along with other work that aligns to the postholder's experience and skillset. They will work in partnership with colleagues throughout the Faculty and University on projects and initiatives, in addition to supporting business as usual processes within the Faculty Office and wider Faculty, as required.

The successful candidate must have strong project management experience and an understanding of key project management methodologies. They will have high levels of initiative and ability to work independently, balanced with an understanding of when collaboration is required and should enjoy working in teams. Leadership and experience of influencing at a senior level will also be important. In addition, they should be excited about and motivated by the opportunity to play a key part in Durham University's ambition to develop and deliver a transformative strategy for its Science Faculty.

This role requires onsite working but there will be opportunities for hybrid working in line with business need and alignment with the wider Faculty Office team.

Qualifications/Experience
1. Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience).
2. Professional practitioner with specialist knowledge and expertise to influence service delivery, events and activities within the organisation.
3. Experience of providing specialist advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues, including more senior colleagues.
4. Experience of participating in internal or external networks to share and discuss good practice, develop strong and productive working relationships and positively influence the University's reputation.
5. Experience of implementing policies and procedures and supporting service improvements.
6. Track record of line management and development experience.

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge
7. Excellent spoken and written communication skills including the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally
8. Strong digital competence across a range of digital devices and apps including digital communication tools, Microsoft 365 applications, business systems.
9. Committed to continuing professional development to maintain professional recognition.
10. Extensive knowledge and experience of ensuring compliance with regulatory and organisational policy and guidelines.
11. Ability to contribute to planning at operational and strategic levels.
12. Ability to solve problems and decide on and plan appropriate solutions.

Desirable criteria

13. Experience of major project work, e.g. working in a portfolio/project office or playing a key role in major strategic programme.

14. Experience of supporting the development of research and research administration and infrastructure, ideally within STEM disciplines.
