Candidate Profile

Qualifications:
  • Education: Degree with a 2:1 or above.
  • Professional Certifications: Chartered Accountant (CA/ACA) and/or Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) or equivalent.

Experience:
  • Tax Expertise: Relevant post-qualification tax experience.
  • VAT Knowledge: In-depth understanding of the UK VAT regime, particularly its application to Exploration & Production (E&P) and UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) activities. Experience in other energy sectors such as renewables and EV charging is advantageous.
  • Customs Duty: Proven experience or strong interest in developing expertise in Customs duty.
  • Company Law: Working knowledge of company law and some familiarity with international transactions involving EU territories.
  • HMRC Interaction: Experience in handling enquiries and obtaining clearances from HMRC.

Activities

  • Cultivate Strong Stakeholder Relationships : Collaborate with stakeholders to identify and implement improvements in indirect tax systems, processes, and structures. Foster a culture of continuous improvement to ensure the business adapts and incorporates best practices.
  • Proactive Indirect Tax Advisory: Offer commercial indirect tax advice to UK business units by reviewing and analyzing proposed transactions before commitments are made, in coordination with corporate tax colleagues.
  • M&A Transaction Support: Provide indirect tax advice for M&A transactions, working with business development, legal, finance, and other teams to manage organizational risk.
  • Legislation Monitoring and Representation: Keep abreast of changes in indirect tax legislation, propose value-adding representations, and ensure the business is prepared for legislative changes.
  • Coaching and Mentoring: Support and mentor Finance and Tax team members to develop their technical and interpersonal skills, aiding in team succession planning.
  • HMRC Negotiations: Negotiate with HMRC on indirect tax issues and audits to resolve queries satisfactorily.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Build relationships with Head Office tax colleagues and liaise on the French tax implications of business transactions to ensure a unified understanding of tax environments, opportunities, and challenges.
  • VAT/Customs Training: Raise business awareness of VAT/Customs issues through basic tax training and provide targeted training for tax department staff on oil and gas industry taxation and new tax developments.
  • Technical Guidance and Support: Offer technical guidance to colleagues in the Tax Department and other support functions on indirect tax matters to achieve optimal business outcomes.
  • Forum Participation: Represent the TotalEnergies Group at UKOITC indirect tax forum meetings and relay relevant issues to commercial managers in appropriate divisions.

As a key member of our central tax team, you will serve as the UK focal point for TotalEnergies' diverse businesses. Your role will involve:
  • Providing indirect tax guidance and technical expertise.
  • Offering commercial tax advice on VAT and Customs duty.

  • Overseeing indirect tax matters across the UK, considering the unique cultures and priorities of our separately managed divisions.
