Job summary

We�re looking for a legal adviser to join a friendly and collaborative legal team in Companies House.� The team is currently made up of nine members (two senior legal advisers, five legal advisers and two support staff). �It is anticipated that the team may be restructured in the near future into two sub-teams, one concentrating on enforcement and contentious matters with the other concentrating on advisory work. After the restructure the advisory team will comprise one senior legal adviser, six legal advisers and two support staff. �The advertised post will be in the advisory team as one of the six legal advisers, and will report to the senior legal adviser.

The work is varied and interesting, and can be complex, novel and fast paced.� Our lawyers provide high quality advice to colleagues in operational, policy, and digital teams on the interpretation and application of legislation.� If a public law challenge is made, the lawyers deal with it and, as appropriate, engage the litigation group in the Government Legal Department.� The team also works closely with policy colleagues to shape and implement central government legislative proposals that impact Companies House.�

Our lawyers also provide legal awareness and training sessions for non-legal colleagues, and are encouraged to participate in Companies House�s wider corporate activities.

Job description

As one of our legal advisers you will:

- give high quality, accurate and timely legal advice and guidance on a range of policy, legislative and operational matters to colleagues across Companies House;

-advise policy colleagues on proposed changes to services or policies, supporting the analysis of the potential impacts on Companies House, its processes and systems as well as providing legal support to the subsequent implementation of any change;

- draft documents ( Registrar Rules, Fees Regulations);

- provide input to help shape legislation that affects the operations of Companies House, working with colleagues across government;

- advise on public law challenges arising from the performance of the functions carried out at Companies House, liaising with the Government Legal Department and Counsel as appropriate;

- support Companies House�s transformation agenda;

- provide training and support to colleagues on relevant legal issues;

- work collaboratively by building effective relationships and engaging with colleagues in Companies House and, as appropriate, officials and lawyers across government;

- delegate to and support, as appropriate, the Legal Business and Change Manager and Legal Secretary.� Line management responsibilities sit with the legal advisers, rotating periodically;

-� take an active wider corporate role in Companies House�s Leadership Team.

The work is varied, and you will be expected to be flexible as to the work and responsibilities you undertake from time to time.�

Person specification

We are looking for an exceptional lawyer with strong intellectual and analytical skills and sound legal judgement. You must have an appreciation of legal risk and the ability to find legally sound solutions that factor in the wider context. You will be able to tailor advice so that it is appropriate and comprehensible to the audience and situation. �You will be able to develop effective relationships with a range of colleagues and be committed to delivering excellent timely legal services to meet the needs of Companies House.� You will need to be flexible and deal with and prioritise competing demands successfully.

This is an exciting opportunity to join us as we�re in the middle of a legislative programme of change that has given us significantly enhanced powers. Good quality legal advice will be needed to underpin the way forward.

Professional qualifications

Applicants must be qualified to practice as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales having completed a training contract or pupillage.

Technical Skills - to be assessed at sift and/or interview

Reliable legal judgement and appreciation of legal risk.Ability to analyse complex legal issues, using all available legal resources and evidence.Ability to produce timely and fit for purpose advice. Ability to apply legal skills to new or unfamiliar areas of law.

Qualifications

Alongside your salary of �50,932, Companies House contributes �14,755 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

Please note that the minimum salary does not reflect the 2023/24 pay deal and we are therefore expecting this to increase in the near future.
