To deliver its outputs, 71 (Inspection & Repair) Squadron relies on an adaptable team with a good understanding of the customers� requirements; the successful candidate will be encouraged to demonstrate at interview an ability to fit in and collaborate as part of this team.
71 (Inspection and Repair) Squadron is headquartered at Royal Air Force Wittering and in addition to our manufacturing capability, the Squadron also boasts Repair Design Authority, Aircraft Repair and Non-Destructive Testing specialisms, as well as supporting functions. The Squadron is also paving the way in developing Additive Manufacturing in aerospace domain for the Royal Air Force.
Workshops directly support Aircraft Repair teams when required. As well as air system support, they also provide manufacture and repairs to station assets.
Air Command provides an open, flexible, and supportive work environment and Civil Servants and Armed forces personnel work together in a wealth of interesting and challenging jobs in different disciplines, from finance, legal service; personnel and HR, project planning and managing contracts, to media and communications.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job description
As a Skill Zone 3 General Workshops Technician, you will be responsible to Officer Commanding Support Flight, through the Senior Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of Workshops.� You will be responsible for:
- Manufacture and repair of components in accordance with given drawings/patterns/repair schemes.
- Vehicle welds in accordance with supplied repair schemes.
- General technical support to the off-site Additive Manufacturing facility as and when required.
- Contributing to the efficient organisation, trade practices, security and cleanliness of the workshop areas.
- Monitoring and ensuring compliance with Health and Safety Instructions at all times. Including following and assisting in Health & Safety procedures in the workplace, identifying hazards and mitigation's for assessing risk.
- Ensuring that correct tool control procedures when conducting manufacturing activities and training activities.
- Ensuring that all personal protective equipment and respiratory protective equipment that is required for any task is in a serviceable condition.
- Conducting all training associated with role and working area.
Person specification
The successful candidate will have at least two years' experience working within a workshop manufacturing environment, including welding practices (MIG & TIG), holding a NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds (or equivalent) in Fabrication and Welding. The candidate must also have a basic skills in IT, and be able to use Microsoft Office, especially Work and Excel applications.
A driving licence is also essential, as travel may be required for training that may require attendance at residential courses and detached duty (work away from home base) may be required but will recompensed appropriately.
�Desirable Skills:
- Experience of manual turning and milling, or a qualification in Machining would be advantageous, but not essential as this can be attained under professional development once in post.�
- Working knowledge of and 3D Feature-Cam drawing software for Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machines, is desirable but not essential and can be developed in post.
