The role of Director Submarine Acquisition (DSMA) is to strategically align, maintain and lead the submarine acquisition pipeline to enable delivery of individual submarine build projects. This currently includes the completion of the Astute submarine build programme, supporting the delivery of the Dreadnought programme, to renew the UK strategic nuclear deterrent, and the design of a new attack Submarine for the UK and Australia the SSN-AUKUS programme. DSMA will ensure the submarine acquisition pipeline is fit for purpose, works effectively at an enterprise level, the SDA meets its delivery responsibilities and is also responsible for ensuring the UK supply chain is sustained as a strategic national asset to support submarine design and build over future decades. They will also take the lead on specific delegated SDA delivery projects as required. To achieve this, DSMA works collaboratively with customers in the Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) and the Royal Navy to set the conditions for delivery success. DSMA is accountable for operational and financial management of the acquisition pipeline and for managing the associated MOD workforce, including their health and safety.

The acquisition portfolio is delivered through three principal Industry Partners: BAES, RR and Babcock and a supporting Alliance structure. DSMA works collaboratively with their respective Managing Directors, to strategically enable delivery of the portfolio, and maintain strong, productive relationships between the parties. Operating on a best for enterprise basis, they work closely with DNO Senior Responsible Owners and the Alliance Managing Director to enable build project success.

DSMA is the lead on the SDA Executive Committee for the design and delivery of new submarines, reporting directly to the SDA CEO and is accountable for the implementation of the SDA28 improvement strategy across the Acquisition Directorate.

The role requires relevant and extensive leadership capability, portfolio management and project delivery experience, commercial acumen and is trusted to deliver the most technically challenging acquisition portfolio in Defence.

1. Demonstrable experience leading and managing successful, significant and high-profile delivery portfolios and/or capital projects (preferably within regulated environments) through challenging phases of delivery, maintaining a sustained focus on performance and effective outcomes.

2. Operational experience at Board or near equivalent level with responsibility for delivering business unit/directorate outputs.

3. Evidence of significant financial/budgetary responsibility in either industry or Government contexts.

4. Ability to think beyond the strict boundaries of a role to develop and implement long-term strategies.

5. Strong stakeholder management at senior level to collaborate and build consensus with a wide range of stakeholders across a national endeavour.

6. The ability to lead and set direction across a strategic portfolio, leading multi-disciplinary teams and external partners to design and deliver successful outcomes.

7. An inclusive leadership style which role models. inspires, motivates, and promotes collaboration to develop/coach high performing teams, and champions wellbeing, equality, diversity and inclusion.

Desirable Criteria:

1. Demonstrable experience in leading organisational change and successful implementation to embed new cultures, behaviours and ways of working.

The successful candidate will hold the following qualifications/ memberships:
  • Chartered Professional in either Engineering or Project Management

or
  • Successful completion of the Major Project Leadership Academy programme or equivalent programme .
