About the Opportunity

Currently, there is an opportunity for a Structural Integrity Engineer to join our Structural Integrity & Materials Engineering (SIME) Team within MSSI, providing an engaging role in vital national and international civil and defence programmes, developing and applying structural integrity assessment methods, particularly applied to metallic components. Ideally, the applicant should have an understanding and some experience of:
  • conventional and computational stress analysis, in particular the Abaqus finite element package,
  • the use of fracture mechanics methodologies (by way for example of applying R6 or BS7910 methods) to conduct defect tolerance assessments (DTA), as well as supporting the preparation of engineering critical assessments (ECAs), sometimes referred to as fitness-for-purpose or fitness-for-service assessments
  • inelastic deformation and failure mechanisms of ductile and/or brittle structural components,
  • scientific & scripting programming languages (e.g., C++, Fortran, Python and Matlab),

This role provides a diverse and exciting range of opportunities to support a variety of clients in relation to the structural integrity of regulated assets.

Our Team is based primarily at our Birchwood Park office near Warrington in Cheshire, UK (other office facilities in Manchester, Knutsford) and comprises a broad range of multi-disciplined structural integrity experts spanning metallurgy, materials science, corrosion science, finite element stress analysis, structural integrity analysis/assessment, structural and mechanical engineering, non-destructive examination and advanced manufacturing processes.

We provide these services to a range of customers, mainly but not exclusively in the nuclear industry, to ensure the economic and safe operation of capital-intensive plant, from both government and private industry. We also actively participate in a number of national and international projects and maintain close links with universities, particularly in relation to the research and development work we undertake and support. Presenting our work at national and international conferences is encouraged.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform and may lead on technical analysis, modelling, and consultancy, completing assigned tasks to time, cost and quality.
  • Produce fit-for-purpose deliverables such as technical reports, conclusions, recommendations and advice to customers.
  • Pro-actively interact and collaborate with project team, supplier, other organisations and customer contacts as appropriate.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate completion of own allocated tasks and maybe for those allocated to others.
  • Fulfil role in keeping with business requirements for health, safety, environment, security and quality.
  • Responsible for ensuring delivered work is of required standard.
  • Working independently but with guidance in the more complex situations

Here's what you'll need:
  • Degree (Level 6 or equivalent) in relevant Scientific or Engineering subject
  • Working towards membership of a professional institution is desirable (EngTech)
  • Specialist knowledge in relevant field
  • Experience in design, development and solving engineering problems
  • Communication and interpersonal skills

We are seeking out applicants who can apply theoretical concepts, together with practical skills and knowledge, to challenging and technically complex problems that impact on the safety and performance of nuclear components.

Our Culture:

Our values stand on a foundation of safety, integrity, inclusion and diversity. We put people at the heart of our business, and we genuinely believe that we all succeed by supporting one another through our culture of caring. We value positive mental health and a sense of belonging for all employees.

As a Disability Confident employer, we will interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a vacancy.
