The role

An opportunity has arisen for a Graduate Environmental & Sustainability Advisor to join the VolkerRail HSQES team. The position is open to candidates with different levels of experience, including graduates and experienced professionals. The role will join VolkerRail Major Projects Division assigned to the Southern Track Renewal Framework, which is part of the Southern Renewals Enterprise (SRE). The role is site based supporting delivery within the Network Rail Southern Region (Kent, Wessex and Sussex Routes), with opportunities to work out of the SRE regional offices in Central London and Tonbridge. Travel to operational sites within all three regions will be expected.

Key accountabilities

Reporting to the Senior Environmental & Sustainability Manager, the role's key duties will include:

  • Responsible for the implementation of, and compliance with, standards and procedures on a day-to-day basis to enable compliance with the VolkerRail Integrated Management System (IMS) as detailed in the company's Safety Certificate and Principal Contractors Licence.
  • Undertake HSQES inspections and audits ensuring items requiring attention are resolved with responsible managers and communicated throughout the business, as appropriate.
  • Facilitate the communication of VolkerRail procedures throughout contract areas to support the development, maintenance, and improvement of a good HSQES Culture.
  • Responsible for operating within the practice and standards of the VolkerRail Environmental Management System, assessing, and communicating changes in scope and applicability to the Head of Environment and Sustainability.
  • Facilitate the continual improvement of the assigned contract, VR Business Division, Joint Venture or Alliance's environmental sustainability performance, achieving the organisations HSQES Strategic Goal to be a 'socially and environmentally responsible business'.
  • Responsible for understanding the applicability of environmental legislation to the assigned contract, VR Business Division, Joint Venture, or Alliance, supporting assurance activities and escalation of compliance concerns to line management and relevant operational personnel.
  • Determine the environmental sustainability deliverables of client contracts and other client standards or documentation, effectively communicating them internally and ensuring they are integrated into design, construction, commissioning and hand back arrangements.
  • Develop and maintain environmental sustainability documentation (e.g., Environment and Social Management Plans, Site Waste Management Plans, Community Impact Assessments etc.) as specified internally within the EMS or client requirements.
  • As instructed, liaise with regulatory authorities to support environmental consent applications and/or exemptions and responsible for communicating any specified restrictions, mitigations, compensation, or enhancements requirements for incorporation within project management control processes.
  • Responsible for monitoring and reporting contract and/or business environmental sustainability performance objectives, targets, and indicators.
  • Support investigations into environmental incidents, nuisance complaints and high potential environmental close calls as directed by the Designated Competent Person and administration within the VR/client event management system(s) within the required timescales.
  • Prepare content for internal, external and client facing communication and promotion of environmental sustainability achievements, including contract review meetings, client forums, case studies, and best practices.
  • Support engagement initiatives to promote and raise awareness, at all levels, of the impact of emerging environmental sustainability issues, whether legislative or best practice.
  • Deliver environmental sustainability training across the assigned VR Business Division, Joint Venture or Alliance's activities.
Skills and experience

You will be self-motivated with a pro-active approach and have experience of working under pressure and meeting tight deadlines. Integrity, problem solving, communication and good interpersonal skills are a key requirement for this role.

The candidate must have Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline (Environmental Science, Ecology, Geography), Graduate Member of IEMA or Practitioner Member of IEMA (PIEMA). Some environmental experience is desired but attitude and collaborative behaviours and a passion for the environment are more important.

The candidate shall ideally have the following experience/skill set
  • High level numeracy and IT skills, with proven ability to expertly use a range of relevant software e.g. MS Office.
  • Passionate about sustainability and protecting the environment.
  • Willingness to learn and develop new skills.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage a diverse workload.
  • Certificate of Competence in Environmental Noise Measurement.
  • Personal resilience and ability to thrive in a challenging and fast-moving environment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team and able to seek out opportunities.
  • Full UK Driver Licence
