Glasgow, Glasgow City, United Kingdom University of Strathclyde Full time

Faculty of Science

FTE: 1 FTE

Term: Fixed Term (24 months)

A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the group of Prof. Katharina Edkins at the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences (SIPBS) at the University of Strathclyde. Prof. Edkins leads a group investigating the connection between supramolecular interactions in the solution/amorphous phase before and in the crystal structures after crystallisation with the aim to predict the crystallisation outcome of an experiment before performing it. The group is aligned to a major national EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Continuous Manufacturing and Crystallisation (CMAC; ) and as such benefits from access to world class crystallisation and analytical facilities in a community of cross-disciplinary postgraduate and post-doctoral researchers looking at various aspects of crystallisation, secondary manufacturing, and advanced solid state analysis.

This position is part of an ERC consolidator grant funded through the UKRI guarantee scheme (EP/Z00005X/1) and will involve using FTIR, NMR and neutron scattering techniques to study molecular interactions in the glass and solution phases. This post will investigate the influence of different solvents on the supramolecular interactions of solute molecules both in terms of the solution structure as well as the interaction energy. By generating a large dataset, this information will feed forward into a chemometric approach to quantify the influence of specific solvents leading to either no change in crystallisation outcome, change in crystallisation outcome or solvate formation. Understanding the solvent influence will enable industry to exchange solvents safely during manufacturing as well as streamline the current crystal form screen required by the FDA for each new pharmaceutical drug compound.

The successful candidate will conduct their own research project as well as support a team of six PhD student in their related research projects. The candidate will further support the PI in running the research group, publish high-impact peer-reviewed papers, apply for beamtime allocation at national and internation central facilities (both synchrotron and neutron facilities), and represent the group at national and international conferences and workshops. The ability to work independently as well as within diverse project teams will be essential. The candidate must also have demonstrable analytical writing experience and publication record.

The successful candidate should hold a PhD degree or equivalent or is in the process of obtaining this qualification. Furthermore, the candidate should hold a good first degree in Chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science or related discipline. Relevant experience in X-ray or neutron scattering, supramolecular chemistry, host-guest chemistry and the related analytical methods is highly desirable. Experience in practical running and theory of NMR spectroscopy is essential.

SIPBS is one of the UK's leading research institutes in pharmaceutical and biomedical science with a 4* research environment rating from REF2014. The institute is an integrated research facility covering a broad spectrum of research areas ranging from microbiology to drug delivery. This position will be multidisciplinary in its nature and there will be significant opportunities to interact with scientists from other disciplines through alignment with the EPSRC Centre for Continuous Manufacture and Crystallisation.

For further information and informal enquiries please contact Prof. Katharina Edkins ).

Formal interviews for this post will be held on 15/08/2024.
