London, Greater London, United Kingdom Freedom from Torture Full time

Are you passionate about using people power to change the world? Do you believe in standing up for human rights alongside refugees and helping them to rebuild their lives in the UK?

We have an exciting opportunity for an Organiser to join Freedom from Torture in delivering our first ever big organising program, developing collective action to build a UK that is accessible and welcoming to people seeking sanctuary.

About the Role

These roles will focus on recruiting, training and managing volunteer teams to organise distributed actions that feed into a national campaign strategy. You will be developing volunteer teams and building their infrastructure online and remotely.

You will be based in the award-winning Digital & Campaigns Team at Freedom from Torture and working alongside partners at Asylum Reform Initiative & #TogetherWithRefugees.

This role is ideally London based but can also be remote, however you will regularly be expected to attend in person events in London and major UK cities, so good connections and a willingness to travel for work are required.

Due to the nature of working with volunteers, some evening and weekend work will be required with time off in lieu granted.

These roles have been funded through a grant which currently runs until However, further funding is being sought to extend the project a further year, which would enable an extension of contract.

About You

We would love to hear from you if:

  • You have a deep passion for the refugee rights movement.
  • Relevant lived experience of being a torture survivor and seeking asylum in the UK or another country or experience being forcibly displaced from your country of birth or long-term residence
  • Excellent communication skills, a people person, a person who is energised by connecting with people and has the ability to engage positively across differences in background and political opinion
  • Experience working collaboratively with volunteers or grassroots groups members to organise, campaign or push for change
  • Experience delivering information sessions, training sessions, or undertaking other public speaking engagements

    About Freedom from Torture

In return, we offer a competitive package, with a generous 30-day annual leave entitlement, and 6% employer pension contribution (minimum 1% employee contribution).

Freedom from Torture is committed to showing the salary for all advertised roles and not negotiating salaries for roles, in light of evidence that this contributes to structural inequality.

To view the Job Description and Person Specification, please visit our website.

Please note a CV and a cover letter addressing the job description and person specification of the role are mandatory to be considered for the position.

Freedom from Torture is dedicated to healing and protecting people who have survived torture. We provide therapies to improve physical and mental health, we medically document torture, and we provide legal and welfare help. We expose torture globally, we fight to hold torturing states to account and we campaign for fairer treatment of torture survivors in the UK.

We campaign for national and global change, using evidence from our services and survivor voices to protect and promote survivors' rights and hold torturing states to account. We are proud to play a significant role in the global anti-torture movement. Survivors, active and empowered, are at the centre of all of our work.

Freedom from Torture is committed to its responsibilities under safeguarding, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This post is subject to a satisfactory DBS disclosure, as well as a need for full employment history and up to date employment references.

Freedom from Torture is an equal opportunity employer. People with lived experience of torture or asylum, from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQIA+ individuals and people with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

We reserve the right to close the vacancy early if we receive a high volume of applications.

    No agencies please.
