This EPSRC funded, full-time post is available immediately on a 3 year fixed-term basis with the possibility of extension, to participate in the EPSRC-funded AI research hub "Causality in Healthcare AI" (CHAI).

The post

The CHAI Hub is a £12M investment in the development of new theory, methods and applications for causality integration in healthcare AI. It is led by University of Edinburgh and involves University College London (UCL), Imperial College, Kings College London, University of Manchester, as well as a wide range of leading industry collaborations.

The University of Exeter team will lead CHAI research in all aspects of social research and responsible innovation and ethics. We will lead a series of co-creation activities to boost CHAI network and requirements gathering. We will lead the institution of oversight boards that will develop guidelines to Causal AI adoption. We will closely collaborate with academic and industrial partners leading development of technical solutions to ensure the operationalisation and embedment of societal, ethical, organisational and epistemological requirements in healthcare technology, and the reduction of ethical risk and inequity. We will conduct reflexive qualitative research on the development of Causal AI.

Based in the Department of Social and Political Sciences, Philosophy and Anthropology, with affiliations to Egenis, the Centre for the Study of Life Sciences, and the Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. You will work closely with the CHAI Exeter lead Dr. Niccolò Tempini, on key network development as well as qualitative research work.

About you

This is a unique opportunity to join a large UK-wide team of experts working on causal inference for healthcare to make a real difference in the field of causal AI. Exeter is a member of The Alan Turing Institute, the UK's national institute for data science and artificial intelligence.

The successful applicant will:

  • be a nationally recognised authority in a relevant research field, such as science and technology studies (STS); philosophy of science or medicine; sociology of science or medicine; anthropology of science or medicine; or information systems
  • possess a PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study
  • possess sufficient specialist knowledge to develop collaborative research projects, and outputs
  • be able to work in an interdisciplinary context; work with stakeholder and community partners, developing partnerships
  • be able to communicate complex information clearly across specialisms and with wider publics; and explore networks in Exeter and across CHAI. A research interest in inference and causality is important
