About this opportunity

The Research Area Networks within Ericsson is responsible for end-to-end architectures and protocols for the Radio Access Network (RAN), core network, transport, and cloud, and on how to optimise, handle, and orchestrate networks and network functions based on analytics, policies, and machine intelligence algorithms. We also drive standardisation in these areas, collaborate with leading academic institutions, develop prototypes and testbeds, and provide concepts and general expertise for Ericsson products and business units. We are looking for a Master Researcher to help establish an Ericsson research team in the UK. The team will build a network, create novel concepts, and develop capabilities. This will enable Ericsson?s technology leadership drive towards an intelligent 6G future network platform, providing limitless connectivity with focus on radio access networks and its interfaces.

The focus of this position lies in architecture, protocol design and standardisation for enhancing 5G towards 6G to support denser deployments and improving sensing and positioning capabilities. This includes research in the areas of network densification with emerging technologies like distributed MIMO systems, 6G deployment challenges including indoor, and joint communication and sensing with AI/ML.

What you will do

  • Support the site manager in the establishment of a new Ericsson Research site in the UK and an effective research community network in the UK telecom ecosystem
  • Work in our world-class, cross-disciplinary teams on future-looking and groundbreaking technologies utilising outstanding assets such as laboratories and simulators
  • Lead and conduct research studies on new concepts and technologies for 6G Radio Access Network (RAN) architecture and implementations, and protect research results by IPR (Intellectual Property Rights)
  • Represent Ericsson externally including standardisation bodies like 3GPP and O-RAN, UK and EU projects, university collaborations, as well as engagement with customers

You will bring

  • Education: PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or similar with a strong research track record in telecoms and at least 5 years experience in the industry
  • A positive approach with a strong dedication to research and innovation
  • Solid expertise in 3GPP-based mobile communication systems with a focus on RAN architecture
  • Solid experts network in the UK ecosystem (academia, industry, government) and excellent communication and presentations skills
  • Strong analytical skills and interest in acquiring new knowledge and applying it at work
  • Strong track-record in performing research leadership in developing research strategies, IPR, and research innovation
  • Competence and experience in link- and system-level simulation
  • Creativity to formulate problems and tackle them independently and in collaboration in a team with varied strengths and external partnerships
  • Experience with standardization is a plus
