London, Greater London, United Kingdom Northeastern University London Full time

Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

Department: Resourcing and Operations

Term: Part-time (0.5 FTE); permanent

Hours: 19 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Benefits

Generous benefits package including 25 days holiday allowance pro rata (excl. Bank holidays), group life assurance, group income protection, pension schemes and private healthcare (optional)

Start date: July 2024

As a Librarian for a higher education provider, you will work in the area of learning resources to provide relevant expertise and support to students and staff. The administration of the service includes acting as Copyright Officer and ensuring legislative compliance.

The University's student body includes undergraduates, postgraduates, and PhD researchers as well as undergraduate apprentices. This role supports the student and staff community by undertaking a combination of remote and in-person duties. The University does not have a physical lending library on campus, but has access to numerous library facilities, including the Northeastern University digital library, and partnerships with Senate House Library (SHL) and the City of London municipal library service at the Barbican, Shoe Lane and Artizan Street lending libraries, as well as their reference resources at Guildhall Library and the London Metropolitan Archives. There is a small on-campus print collection provided in the quiet study spaces to be a reference collection.

This role works in partnership with another part time librarian, reports to the VLE & Learning Resources Manager, and is a member of the wider Resourcing & Operations team. The role requires both independent and collaborative working, forming strong relationships with faculties, local libraries and bookstores and to be the main point of contact with the main Northeastern University Library Service in Boston.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Liaison with partner academic and municipal libraries: management of annual memberships, arranging library tours and inductions, and being the point of contact.
  • Administrative oversight of physical library resources, largely provided for by a collection at Senate House Library, and a small on-campus reference collection.
  • Lead on the development of the on-campus reference collection.
  • Administration of online resources and subscriptions such as Westlaw, Lexis+ etc. including periodic reviews of contracts for access to these resources, negotiation of renewals and new provisions, and ensuring consideration of the budget and wider strategic purposes.
  • Responsibility for identifying and acquiring e-books using Rialto Marketplace and working with Northeastern University Boston librarians to extend the digital library collection.
  • Collection of statistical and other engagement data to inform the library strategy.
  • Troubleshooting with Northeastern University Boston librarians to resolve access issues to library resources.
  • Working with both Course Leaders and the Library & Learning Resources Officers from each Discipline to appropriately source and acquire resources to fulfill course reading lists and to generally support the academic provision.
  • Ensuring that all library collections are up-to-date, accessible, discoverable, and suitable for the needs of all the University's courses and the entire community.
  • Working with partner libraries to develop workshops or other projects relating to the availability of their library resources and services.
  • Communication and championing library resources to all students and staff.
  • Review of student feedback and the submission of recommendations for the enhancement of learning resources.
  • Participation and full contribution to working groups related to learning resources, providing user engagement research data as required.
  • Ensuring the University community is provided with the necessary information and training to comply with the relevant copyright licenses and the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act, 1988 (CDPA).
  • Budget responsibilities for library resources.
