Job Purpose

To work as part of our dedicated STEM team providing prompt and efficient support to staff and students involved in practical activities.

The role will involve the preparing, setting up and clearing away of all practical activities, maintaining equipment and stocks of consumables, ordering, and updating resources and facilities in collaboration with the teaching team and Head of Curriculum to provide support across the STEM department.

To be responsible for advising on and ensuring Health and Safety legislation and guidelines are being followed.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Set-up and organise laboratories and prep rooms with all relevant equipment and materials.
  2. Manage and maintain practical lab and classroom facilities to ensure a well-organised and clean working environment for teaching functions.
  3. Liaise with the teaching team to schedule practical activities to ensure sufficient time to set equipment up beforehand and clear away afterwards.
  4. Prepare, deliver and clear-up sets of equipment, chemicals, materials, instruction sheets etc. for planned practical activities.
  5. Support teachers and students during practical sessions to ensure efficient use of equipment and that safe working practices are met.
  6. Support teachers in making accurate logs of required practical activities by completing observation report/witness statements where required.
  7. Ensure security in the labs and prep rooms is maintained.
  8. Prepare and implement practical risk assessments in accordance with CLEAPSS guidelines and ensure staff understand Health and Safety Regulations
  9. Ensure safe storage and disposal of materials.
  10. Ensure safe storage of radioactive sources in line with legislation.
  11. Maintain stock solutions and stock control, inventory systems, auditing and ordering of resources, ensuring an adequate supply of consumable items is maintained.
  12. Ensure all equipment is fit for use; self-diagnose problems and effect repairs on practical equipment and engage with external maintenance contract providers where necessary.
  13. Troubleshoot hardware and software issues in the labs and ensure software is updated as required.
  14. Provide appropriate training and demonstrations to support staff and students in operating equipment.
  15. Support teachers when they trial new lab practical sessions before lessons.
  16. Have an active involvement in wider School projects.
  17. Participate fully in Department/University activities, including attendance at relevant meetings, boards and committees, as well as recruitment, admissions and assisting in the interviewing of potential students.
  18. Take part in regular and appropriate training across the University.
  19. Attend meetings, training sessions and events that will encourage the development and growth of the A-Level programme providing feedback to the teaching team and Head of Curriculum.
  20. Provide support for Open days and events outside of core hours as required.
  21. Ensure practice is in line with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulations.
  22. Commit to upholding the principles of Safeguarding and the PREVENT agenda.
  23. Perform any other duties commensurate with the nature and grade of the post.

Experience

Experience of preparing A-Level lab practical activities or similar practical activities

Experience of setting up and maintaining practical equipment

Experience of producing stock solutions and controlling an adequate stock of consumable equipment

Experience of requisition and inventory systems, auditing and ordering of resources

Skills & Abilities:

Ability to support learners in a practical environment under guidance from a teacher

Ability to liaise effectively with staff, working both independently and as part of a team

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, IT skills and a high level of personal organisation

Customer-focused approach to ensuring a positive experience for all stakeholders

Practical manual skills in assembly, setting up / commissioning of equipment and troubleshooting faults.

Education & Qualifications:

Minimum GCSE grade C or 4 in English and Maths

Training & Professional Development:

Regular, relevant personal and professional development and willingness to undertake further development for the role

Understanding of current Health & Safety legislation and implementation of Risk Assessments

Other:

An understanding of the principles of Safeguarding and the PREVENT agenda in the context of further and higher education
