As part of the Transport UK Group, West Midlands Trains delivers around 1,300 train journeys a day, for more than 60 million passengers a year, across our two brands - West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway.

We are committed to delivering a safe and reliable train service, by investing in our fleet of trains, stations and employees. As part of this investment, we are looking to recruit a Strategic Engagement Manager, on a full-time permanent basis based in Birmingham, this role will deliver a proactive, industry leading strategic engagement and stakeholder management programme to build WMT's reputation and profile with critical decision makers.

What does the job involve?

  • Secure enhanced reputation and profile for WMT among strategically relevant decision makers and stakeholders including in Westminster and Whitehall.
  • Achieve greater leverage for WMT to influence policy at national and local level and garner support for business objectives.
  • Work with WMT Exec and head of External Communications and Engagement to increase long term security for the business through strategic positioning.
  • Provide greater oversight and proactive management of engagement activity across the business with strategically important stakeholders and partners (outside of contract management) Developing a clear positioning strategy for the key public policy issues impacting UK rail/WMT and related high-level stakeholder target list.
  • Identify appropriate opportunities for WMT to proactively engage in relevant public policy debates nationally and locally to develop a reputation for thought leadership and industry spokespeople, e.g. consultation responses, public statements, speaking at events.

What skills and experience do I need to do the job?

  • Educated to degree level, ideally in a humanities related subject, or equivilant experience.
  • Demonstrable keen interest in and understanding of UK political environment, personalities and decision-making processes at national and regional level.
  • A strategic thinker with good analytical skills.
  • Experience in and understanding of the rail industry and/or wider transport sector.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop strong and effective working relationships internally and externally.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commercially astute with good business acumen and the ability to identify opportunities and threats and act accordingly.
