Department of Health Sciences
The Mental Health and Addiction Research Group wishes to appoint a mixed-methods Research Associate to work on a new National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Programme Development Grant. This work is an extension of the ongoing DIAMONDS (Diabetes and mental illness – improving outcomes and services) programme. Following translation of recruitment and intervention materials, we have been able to offer participation in the trial to individuals from South Asian communities who do not speak English and/or prefer communicating in Urdu.

We therefore require a mixed-methods Research Associate to join the new project "DIAMONDS URDU (Understanding Reach and Delivery in Urdu)"

The post presents an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and highly motivated person to develop their own career in an excellent research environment. To fulfil this role, fluent written and spoken Urdu and English language skills are essential. Knowledge of other South Asian languages or dialects such as Punjabi, Mirpuri, and/or Bangladeshi is desirable. In addition, excellent communication and problem-solving skills, an outstanding commitment to high quality work and attention to detail are essential. Experience of working with South Asian community groups is advantageous.

Ideally, you will be able to work on-site at the University of York (Heslington West campus) at least one day per week. However, in certain circumstances a fully remote working arrangement may be considered. Travel to study sites across the North of England to conduct data collection may be required.

The University of York offers flexible working patterns and several family friendly initiatives. As a department we are proud to foster a supportive culture that helps staff and students contribute fully, flourish and excel, to reach their full potential. We embrace equality, diversity and inclusion as well as the values of the Athena SWAN Charter in all our Departmental activities.

Role
You will be responsible for conducting quantitative and qualitative research. This will involve supporting the recruitment of Urdu-speaking participants in the DIAMONDS RCT, the conduct of qualitative interviews (in Urdu and/or English) and focus groups (in English), the analysis of qualitative data (Urdu and English), and the assessment of intervention fidelity (in Urdu and English). In addition, you will be summarising and analysing qualitative and quantitative data from session logs (in English). You will make critical contributions to project outputs in Urdu and English.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • First degree in a health or social research related field (e.g. psychology, health sciences or similar).
  • PhD (in Psychology, Health Sciences, Public Health or social science related field) or equivalent experience.
  • Fluent in Urdu (written and spoken) and ability to translate accurately between English and Urdu.
  • Knowledge of a range of mixed-methods research techniques and methodologies.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, and an outstanding commitment to high quality work and attention to detail.
