Senior Responsible AI Manager

Glasgow, Glasgow City, United Kingdom BBC Full time
Job Intro

The BBC is making the shift from being a broadcaster that speaks to our audiences to being a service that is shaped by them and designed around their wants and needs whilst stimulating and delighting audiences around the world.

To achieve this mission of being a Digital First BBC, we are building a data organisation which will lead cultural and organisational change.

This includes lots of exciting work on AI.

We're actively exploring the opportunities and challenges of generative AI through a series of pilots, building on a long history of AI research and development at the BBC.

And we're firmly committed to doing this in a responsible way that puts our values first, benefitting all audiences and helping us deliver our public service mission in new and exciting ways.

As the Director General, Tim Davie, said recently in his speech to the Royal Television Society:

We will proactively deploy AI on our terms, always holding on to our published principles ... This will require us to create unique algorithms to serve our values, for good. Algorithms and AI that bring us closer, not drive us apart. Personalisation, of course, but not driven by a narrow commercial return.

In the Responsible AI team it's our job to help make that happen by building a culture where everyone at the BBC is empowered to use AI responsibly.

We're part of the BBC's recently created Data Governance function, and we work across the organisation, from News and Content to HR, Finance and Operations, to make sure everyone is equipped to use AI in a way which maximises the benefits while minimising the potential harms.

It's all about ensuring that our use of AI is aligned with our public service values and compliant with our legal and regulatory obligations.

At this exciting time we're looking for a Senior Responsible AI Manager to support the operationalisation of our governance framework for Responsible AI, playing a crucial role in building out our AI Risk team within the Data Governance function.

Interview Process

Virtual discussion - approx. 30 minutes of opportunity to clarify any questions ahead of the interview
Virtual interview - approx. one hour exploring your skills, experience and ability to put our values into practice

Main Responsibilities

In this role, you'll work closely with the BBC's Responsible AI Lead, and Senior Responsible AI Manager (Governance & Risk) to iterate and operate the new pan-BBC governance framework for AI, enhancing our AI risk assessment, reporting, and compliance practice and processes.

The AI Risk Management process helps to turn our BBC AI Principles into practice, ensuring development, procurement and use of AI at and for the BBC are aligned with our values, policies, and legal and regulatory obligations, and that risks are identified and managed effectively.

You will take ownership of significant aspects of this process, and will use your strong stakeholder management skills to work with business areas to assess risk and recommend mitigations in support of their proposed use cases.

You will be responsible for day to day operation of the risk management and reporting process, and put in place systems to ensure effective performance, including: coordinating risk input from partners in the compliance and risk management space (i.e. Data Protection, Information Security, BBC Legal, etc.), providing subject matter expertise to procurement and tool authorisation processes, conducting AI Impact Assessments and documenting the resulting risks and mitigations, and monitoring ongoing compliance with the BBC Responsible AI Policy.

You will also be responsible for continuing to iterate and improve the risk management process, including horizon-scanning and awareness of relevant external developments; benchmarking against best practice from across industries; and consulting with internal stakeholders and partners to ensure the process is user-friendly and embedded across divisions.

Are you the right candidate?

Essential

  • Experience implementing and/or operationalising an AI or other technology risk and compliance approach
  • Experience carrying out AI Impact Assessments, or similar risk assessments (e.g. audits, risk reviews, or third party risk assessments)
  • Able to manage and deliver a service across complex projects, and prioritise and work in a structured manner to ensure delivery in a timely fashion to multiple stakeholders with competing priorities
  • Able to manage stakeholders, including at senior levels, and to work with partners across the business.
  • Able to clearly communicate to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Able to contribute effectively in a cross functional team, and where necessary to guide, mentor and manage less experienced team-members.
Desirable

  • Familiarity with external AI regulatory landscape, and understanding of responsible AI issues and concerns and how they might apply at the BBC
  • Familiarity with the current AI use cases and toolsets across both the media industry and other industries, including their relative benefits and risks
  • Good data and AI literacy, specifically the ability to understand and discuss key topics (technical AI or data science skills are a bonus but not necessary)
  • Able to be an advocate and evangelist for a responsible approach to data and AI at the BBC
  • Excited about personal development and learning.
