Transport infrastructure is vital for economic development and societal well-being. However, its operability and functionality are continuously challenged by aging, increasing demand, and interdependencies with other networks. The climate crisis, which leads to an increasing frequency and intensity of extreme events, poses an additional critical threat....

Warmer temperatures, extreme droughts, and more intensive convective storms are accelerating deterioration of earthworks, degrading resilience. Climate change is a major national security risk. UK critical infrastructure faces a climate adaptation deficit that will cost up to £1 billion/year by 2050. There is an urgent need to understand why, and anticipate...

More than half of the world's population is urban, with projections indicating a rise to 68% by 2050. In alignment with this, the UK aims to boost housing supply of 300,000 homes per year. However, existing sustainability standards have been deemed insufficient in mitigating the impacts of climate change-induced overheating and lack the necessary...

The total UK consumption of constructional steel in 2021 rose by 16.9% to 803,000 tonnes. Progressive collapse, a catastrophic event with devastating consequences for human life, economic stability, and societal well-being, has been highlighted in several incidents, including the partial collapse of the Champlain Towers in 2021. The rotational capacity of...

The UK's built environment is responsible for around 25% of the UK's greenhouse emissions. Still, as a sector, it offers credible opportunities to mitigate the impact of climate change by applying net zero strategies, circular economy principles and other measures. However, the term net zero is very broad in its scope implying the integration of a wide range...

With the rising demand for sustainable buildings to reduce carbon emissions in the construction industry, there is systemic shift from tradition construction to offsite construction. This is due to the increase in quality and productivity offered by offsite construction to improve construction delivery.Recent studies have identified offsite construction as...

PhD Studentship: Hydration, Metabolic Health and Physical Function Across Adulthood

Loughborough, Leicestershire, United Kingdom Loughborough University Full time

This project takes an integrative physiology approach to understand how hydration/24-h water intake influence metabolic health and physical function in young/older adults, particularly in the context of climate change/global warming.

The project will involve laboratory-based human data collection (cross-sectional or intervention studies) to understand the impact of hydration/24-h water intake on metabolic health/functional outcomes in younger/older adults. This human data collection will be accompanied by in-vitro/ex-vivo experiments to investigate relevant intracellular signalling pathways.

The Doctoral Researcher will develop skills involved in running human/exercise nutrition intervention studies, the collection and analysis of various human samples (e.g. blood, urine, saliva, and potentially muscle), measurement of physical function through various laboratory-based tests, and molecular biology techniques (e.g. RT-qPCR and western blot analysis). There may also be the opportunity to apply stable isotope methods to study water balance using deuterium oxide.

This studentship is funded by the Leicester Biomedical Research Centre which is a collaboration between Loughborough University, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and the University of Leicester. The BRC's purpose is to translate scientific breakthroughs in these areas into diagnostic tests, preventions and life-saving treatments for patients.
