Research Associate in Computational Neuroscience

About the Role
Applications are invited for the above post to work with Dr Jonathan Crofts and Dr David Chappell, in collaboration with Dr Yujiang Wang from Newcastle University, on a Leverhulme Trust-funded project entitled Re-Shaping Brain Activity: The Functional Impact Of Brain Morphology.
The aim of the project is to develop novel computational tools to efficiently solve neural field models on complex curved geometries and to apply these methodologies to better understand the evolutionary role of spatial variations in the cortex on brain function. We will exploit modern computational engineering techniques (isogeometric analysis) to accurately describe brain activity on convoluted cortical geometries, and study how changes in brain shape affect the properties of brainwaves, both among different species and across evolution.
Candidates must hold a PhD, or equivalent, in a relevant branch of mathematics, engineering, or computing. A good knowledge of computational mathematical modelling is essential. In addition, a background in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: numerical solutions of partial integro-differential equations, isogeometric analysis, numerical bifurcation analysis, and computational geometry.
Candidates should be confident, organised, have good communication skills, and enjoy working as part of a team as well as independently. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the publication of scientific papers, their dissemination at relevant conferences, and to undertake frequent visits to our partners at Newcastle University, including an extended 3-month visit during the second half of the project. They should have evidence that the quality and quantity of their previous research outputs are commensurate with their level of experience.
For more details, please take a look at the role profile. We'll still consider applications even if you don't meet every single one of the requirements, so don't be put off if you don't match them perfectly.
Interview Date: Estimated w/c 2nd September
