Background

Working as part of research team, the position holder will support Dr Yuli Shan, in delivery of research activity funded by an EU Horizon project: 'EU-CHINA BRIDGE: Building Roadmaps to Industrial Decarbonisation and Green Economy through EU-China Cooperation'. The position holder (based at the University of Birmingham) will closely work with project partners (e.g., Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, University Kassel, China National Coal Group Corporation, Energie GGMBH, E3-modelling AE, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA)).

The overarching objective of EU-CHINA BRIDGE is to support the transition to a climate-neutral and resilient society in Europe and China by jointly advancing knowledge on technology innovations and roadmaps for decarbonising emission-intensive industries, co-developing innovative modelling (combining cutting-edge bottom-up and IAM modelling) to derive net-zero sustainable pathways, and developing the most updated and comprehensive emissions data by the EU and Chinese experts.

The position holder will work within the scope and objective work package 2 "Building GHG short-lived pollutant emission inventories and dataset" in the EU-CHINA-BRIDGE project. They will primarily develop the most up-to-date emission dataset for global GHG emissions and short-lived climate pollutants emissions for 100+ countries and large emitting industries. They will develop a most comprehensive, multi-sectoral, long-reaching global CO2, CH4, and other non-CO2 emission inventories using local emission factors.

Main Duties

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding
  • Collect, analyse and interpret research data
  • Work with the wider project team to deliver research and innovation outcomes that will contribute to the overall aim of the project
  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
  • Undertake management/administration arising from research
  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
  • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
  • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline

Person Specification

Applicants should hold, or be close to earning, a PhD in Climate Change, Environmental Sciences, Economics, or related disciplines by December 1, 2024. Applicants will be able to be proficient in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to learn or develop new ones (e.g., emission accounting, machine learning techniques, input-output modelling, climate change integrated assessment modelling). The candidate should have high level analytical capability with strong publication records and be able to communicate complex information clearly in English. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.
