Velindre University NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Director of Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering, to have overall professional leadership and management of services, to Velindre University and the SE Wales sub-region (this includes some services in the Aneurin Bevan, Cwm Taf Morgannwg and Powys Health Boards). In addition, they will also be responsible for professional leadership incorporating regulatory accountability of the medical physics and clinical engineering services, provided by and on behalf of Velindre University NHS Trust. More broadly, the Director supports Velindre University NHS Trust at a Corporate level as appropriate to their skills and experience, in meeting the wider objectives of the Trust and at a national level to provide professional representation and advice on Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering matters. A key responsibility of this role is to actively promote and support a culture of innovation.
Main duties of the job
Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching forms an inherent part of the role. Velindre is accredited (NSHCS and IPEM) as a training centre for Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering and works closely with Cardiff University to provide the BSc Physics with Medical Physics, and postgraduate supervision. The Director takes the leading role in clinically focused research and development. Grant and other funding support is obtained from external sources and postgraduate research students are based within the Department and Cardiff University. Joint programmes of research are undertaken in conjunction with Higher Education Institutions in the UK and abroad. Locally in Cardiff University, there are active collaborations with the Schools of Medicine, Physics & Astronomy and Engineering. The collaboration is reinforced by the Director also having an Honorary Professorship in a relevant discipline at Cardiff University (subject to the post-holder meeting University requirements for appointment).

Working for our organisation
As a specialist Trust, the organisation is responsible for the delivery of tertiary non-surgical cancer services to the population of South East Wales and for the Welsh Blood Service across Wales. The Trust employs circa 1,200 staff and in addition, is a hosting body to two national NHS services in Wales, the NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership and Health Technology Wales. The Trust has a hugely ambitious change agenda including the building of a new Velindre Cancer Centre and development of regional and partnership working with Health Boards across Wales. This role will play a crucial part in the realisation of the organisations ambitions. The role will provide an opportunity to shape and deliver clinical services in cancer and blood services and to play a key role as part of the senior leadership team of the organisation to take our ambitious agenda forward.
