Wigan, Wigan, United Kingdom Wigan Council Full time

Wigan Borough is made up of a collection of brilliant towns making one great place to live work, and visit. Our residents are proud of the strong towns we have created together along with historic villages and a wealth of green spaces. We are committed to the successful delivery of key strategies which our residents have told us are really important to them, including waste reduction strategy and our "Keep it Clean", littering and fly tipping reduction strategy. As a council we are focusing heavily on how the borough looks and feels, residents want our borough to be clean, green, safe and somewhere we can all look after and enjoy as a community. We want that too, and we want to continue to work together with our communities to make that happen.

As the Assistant Director of Environmental Services and Operational Development, you will drive forward a workforce that promotes a culture of getting the basics right first time. You will be a strong leader who can devise transformational plans, finding new and innovative ways of delivering environmental service and housing repairs services that our residents need. You will be creative in your approach, with a strong ability to form and maintain great relationships, especially with our Elected Members.

Climate change is very real, and as the Assistant Director you will play a key role in supporting our corporate ambition of being a council that is net carbon neutral by 2038 or sooner, ensuring we maximise the positive impact we can have on the health, wellbeing and prosperity of our residents. As a key member of the senior management team, you will have the opportunity to make key changes to ensure we meet our strategic goals for the borough as we move forward on with our emerging 'Progress with Unity' strategy.

Wigan Council has been voted 'Overall Council of the Year' at the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Awards and has recently published The Deal 2030, our ambitious plan for our borough. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.

Here at Wigan, we are proud to support flexible working patterns, when the service can accommodate this. We also take a blended approach to where we work, depending on the work we do. This may include working from home (My Place), the office (Our Place) or the community (Your Place). We like to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of exclusive rewards and benefits click here to find out more about working for #TeamWigan.

We welcome applications from everybody in the community and would particularly encourage applicants from our underrepresented groups to apply. At Wigan, it is really important to us that applicants demonstrate our Team Wigan behaviours, and we do all we can to make sure that everyone feels like they belong. We have guidance in place to ensure that all applicants are treated fairly and consistently at every stage of the recruitment process.
