Job introduction

BBC Radio Kent is the place to celebrate where we live, tell great stories and have fun with our listeners. We're looking for a talented and enthusiastic social media journalist to join our team, bringing Kent's stories alive on-air and online.

Main responsibilities

You will be responsible for the day-to-day running of our social media accounts and you'll reversion content to appeal to online audiences who might not normally listen to live radio.

You will work alongside Audio production teams, the Regional Social Lead and social media colleagues in News to drive engagement and the growth of referrals from sites like Facebook to BBC products and services, including BBC Sounds.

Your work will promote radio station activities and your creative film-making skills will help you to turn the biggest local talking points into content for social media and our broadcast output.

You will be the champion of new social media formats like radio studio visualisation and you will need to be a big believer in teamwork because you'll often be the person colleagues turn to for help - so you should enjoy helping others to develop their digital skills.

Are you the right candidate?

This is a great opportunity for someone who loves radio, storytelling and podcasts and believes in the potential to reach new audiences on social media platforms.

You don't need to have a background in journalism or news – you just need to know a great story when you hear it. An appreciation of local services is important, but you don't need to have worked in local radio. This is an exciting new opportunity, and a real chance to make an impact.

Ideally, you'll already have film-making skills and know how to shoot and edit your own material using MoJo kit or DSLR cameras and software like Final Cut Pro. You might know how to use online publishing tools like Social Flow and iBroadcast. You might also have a good knowledge of social media analytics and know how to spot emerging trends in performance. Training will also be provided.

About the BBC

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.

We don't focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you've read about our values and behaviours here.

Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.

We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC – whether that's to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.
