The Southgate Club – Vacancy for Bar and Catering Manager

The Southgate Club is a 'Community Pub' established in 1928. It's located in the attractive village of Southgate, which lies within the area of Outstanding Natural Beauty of Gower. It's just a short walk away from Pobbles Bay, Three Cliffs Bay and Pennard Castle. Owned by its 400 plus members, mainly drawn from the local community, it's popular with local residents, tourists and dog walkers alike and well known for its good food and selection of ales. It has a pool table, dart board and Bridge Club along with a popular weekly quiz. The Southgate is also a popular meeting place for different organisations and clubs based in the village.

We are seeking to appoint an experienced Bar and Catering Manager whose role will be to grow the business and ensure it remains at the heart of the community. Your hard work will be rewarded with the opportunity to profit from the club's success

For this position you will have superb customer service skills, together with a good working knowledge of beers, wines, spirits as well as the provision of good quality food.

You will be responsible for all aspects of day to day running of the Club including staffing.

Further Details

As the Manager you will be expected to use your own initiative to run the Southgate, within the guidelines and working standards outlined in your contract and as directed by the club's management team.

The Southgate is normally open for around 70 hours per week.

Personal Qualities Needed

The ideal manager will have the following qualities:

  • Outgoing, with excellent customer service skills
  • Experience in both Pub/bar management and catering
  • Well organized
  • Able to motivate and build a team
  • Be able to build relationships with customers and suppliers
  • Interact positively with the local community

The following is an indication, rather than an exclusive list of the duties and responsibilities.

  • Hold a personal licence to sell alcohol and carry out the duties & responsibilities arising from this
  • Provide staffing for all aspects of the business
  • Responsible for training staff (including Health and Safety, fire regulations); keep records of training.
  • Arrange payment of staff with due attention to the legal and tax requirements
  • Provide food service including compliance with all food service regulations; ensure the menu is attractive to customers
  • Maintain, order and monitor all bar supplies and ancillary items
  • Liaise with suppliers
  • Record any accidents, incidents and report same to committee
  • Monitor state of premises; report and deal with issues in line with financial regulations
  • Keep financial and bar stock records; ensure waste is kept to a minimum
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation
  • Ensure cleanliness of all areas
  • Arrange social events and private bookings as appropriate
  • Publicise events on Social Media
  • Liaise with the officers and committee

Remuneration

The remuneration will be in the form of a package, to be negotiated, which equates to circa £55,000 per annum (less staffing costs) but plus all profits from the catering side. An additional Management Fee (Variable) is paid towards additional staff costs, during the busy summertime period.

The appointment is on the basis of a 12 month contract and will be subject to a probationary period, with reviews every 3 months in the first year. Assuming satisfactory performance, the contract will be renewed annually.

The club owns a 2 bedroom cottage which is immediately next door to the club building. The Manager may live here if they wish. In this case, the housing is subject to an occupancy agreement. Cost £100 per week including utilities but excluding council tax.

It should also include your plan, outlining how the future success of The Southgate Club will be achieved under your guidance.
