Job Summary
This is an exceptional opportunity for an ambitious Research Associate to join a team integrating biophysical approaches with the design and implementation of DNA nanostructures to investigate cellular mechanobiology, in the group of Dr Katelyn Spillane at the South Kensington Campus.
This project seeks to develop accessible methods for cell biologists to measure forces transmitted by any receptor-ligand pair in any cell type using equipment widely available in biological laboratories. The project will rely on the control of DNA hybridisation to detect and amplify force signals at cellular interfaces, using light as a readout. The work will be done in collaboration with Dr Jonathan Bath (University of Oxford), who has expertise in designing, simulating, and constructing DNA-based devices.
Duties and responsibilities
You will be responsible for carrying out experimental research on the project using techniques including, but not limited to, fluorescence microscopy, molecular and cell biology, and design and coarse-grain modelling of DNA nanostructures. The candidate will also be required to analyse experimental data, write analysis programmes, and design new experimental techniques.
You will actively participate in team meetings, project updates, and collaborative discussions both internally within the team and with external partners. You will be expected to present work through the writing of papers for publication and attendance and presentation at conferences.
You will provide guidance and direction to undergraduate and postgraduate students, fostering a collaborative and productive research environment.
Essential requirements
You should hold, or be near completion of, a PhD (or equivalent) in a Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, or closely related scientific discipline and have a successful track record of academic publications commensurate with experience.
You should have a high level of expertise and skills in cell and molecular biology and cellular biophysics, and practical experience of working in a multi-disciplinary research environment with the ability to develop and apply new concepts, techniques, and methods.
Further Information
This is a full time, fixed term position until 31 August 2025. You will be based at South Kensington Campus.
Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant.
