The role

We are seeking to appoint an exceptional Technical Manager on a flexible part time (60%) basis.

The School of Geographical Sciences is home to approximately 150 staff, 180 postgraduate students and 600 undergraduate students. The technical services within the School consist of 5 core staff who support academic research, teaching and field work across a broad range of Geographical themes, as well as a growing number of grant-funded research technicians working directly on projects

The School Technical Manager provides high quality and inspiring leadership and management of technical services. You will be responsible for the successful delivery of efficient and effective technical services and for providing an outstanding experience to our students and staff. You will act as School Safety Advisor and ensure that all operations within the School are conducted safely.

What will you be doing?

  • Lead and direct technical services for the School to deliver a range of high quality and effective technical services, overseeing the School's teaching and research laboratory platform
  • Provide advice and guidance on safety matters as the School's Safety Advisor, acting as line manager to the School Safety Officer.
  • Chair the School's Technical Planning & Resourcing Committee and be a member of senior leadership committees.
  • Represent the School at appropriate internal bodies.
  • Provide leadership, direction and guidance to lab users, supervisors and managers, be an escalation point for technical services development, staffing and resources, staff review and development.
