NRL are recruiting on behalf of our client, for an Assistant Shift Manager on a permanent basis in Ashington.

Job Purpose & Scope:

The Assistant Shift Manager role is designed for an individual to gain the necessary knowledge and experience to become a full time Shift Manager once passed out and on completion of the relevant training programme. Training time is dependent upon the existing skills and knowledge of the individual.

The Assistant Shift Manager role is key to the success of the Power Station as they are directly responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the power station within our environmental limits. While the Assistant Shift Manager has very little direct budget responsibility, they have a significant input into the financial success of the business by ensuring the power plant runs safely and efficiently in the production of electricity. This has a direct effect on the financial performance of the business. The Assistant Shift Manager must also make decisions which have a direct effect on the financial performance of the business

Responsible for supporting the Shift Manager to ensure the:
  • Safe effective and efficient operation of the generating units.
  • Generating units operate within the Station's environment permit.
  • Safety from the system within their level of authorisation when required. (11kv)
  • Operation control of the fuel route desk.
  • Co-ordination of the Operations team to meet the above objectives alongside the Shift Manager.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Leadership
  • Ensure that activities within the Operations team are co-ordinated in line with Shift Manager's request and operation procedures.
  • Assist in ensuring that unit generation is maximised while operating the plant safely and efficiently at all time and within the parameters set out with in the environmental permit and operating procedures and safety parameters.
  • Assist in ensuring maximum employee utilisation within the operations team.
  • Maintain high levels of positive engagement amongst the Operations team, demonstrating the importance and effectiveness of communication.
  • Actively communicate with other station departments and external personnel, building trust and developing constructive working relationships.
Safety
  • Maintain high levels of safety performance within the Operations team and plant.
  • Ensure appropriate policies, systems and processes are followed during the operation of the generating units.
  • Provide safety from the system as required within level of authorisation.
  • Demonstrate personal commitment to behavioural safety through own actions and attention.
  • Ensure Operations team activities are completed in a safe manner.
Environmental Performance
  • Assist in monitoring and maintaining the units within parameters set out in the Station's environmental permit, taking appropriate action required if there is potential to deviate from parameters.
  • Contribute to the development of technical knowledge and skills of Operations team members.
Business Performance and Improvement
  • Assist in the development of and implementation of a range of performance improvement measures and activities.
  • Promote a forward-looking, solution-focused approach to production and decision-making
  • Maximise safe and efficient unit generation.
Technical Competence and Development
  • Assist in providing robust, practical management of technical competence, to manage and mitigate risks and maximise the value potential of individuals within Operations team.
  • Assist in maintaining appropriate internal training to ensure that the required skills are in place.
Finance
  • Assist in managing and controlling business expenditure within agreed budgets.
Qualifications
Essential:
  • Level 3 qualification, e.g., ONC, NVQ, A-level in Maths, Science, Design & Technology, or similar relevant subject.
  • Qualified to City and Guilds (level 3) in Power Plant Operation
  • HNC (level 4) in Engineering, or similar relevant subject.
Desirable:
  • HND (level 5) in Engineering, or similar relevant subject.
  • Equivalent relevant experience in power generation at a similar level.
  • NEBOSH qualified.
  • Leadership experience in heavy industry

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of safe systems of work including permit to work, method statements and risk assessments.

Skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a continuous improvement mindset and the ability to develop and influence high-level relationships, both internally and externally.
  • Capable of making sound strategic and operational decisions, based on strong data analytical and management skills.
  • Ability to positively influence the working culture across the business.
  • Demonstrates personal commitment to the highest standards of safety through their own actions and attention.
  • Self-motivated individual thriving in a dynamic work environment.
  • A critical thinker who is comfortable to make decisions under time pressure.

Experience
  • Previous professional experience working within the power generation sector, or relevant industry background.
