Would you like to earn a salary, whilst learning on the job and gaining a qualification? We have an exciting opportunity for a Toolroom apprentice. You will learn general machining skills such as milling, turning and surface grinding as well as progression press tool making, fault finding and bench fitting.

What will the apprentice be doing?

To manufacture tooling using traditional engineering machines including manual mills, lathes, surface grinders with the addition of a spark eroder and a cylindrical grinder. Along with:

  • Maintaining and servicing multi-stage press and form tools.
  • Programming and use of CNC wire eroders ideally via CAD/CAM software.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and manufacture parts accordingly.
  • Design and manufacture jigs and fixtures.
  • Work with production staff to resolve technical tooling issues within a manufacturing environment.
  • Understanding of measuring methods and associated equipment.
  • Setting of production power presses ranging from 6 to 75T.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Year 1

  • Foundation Competence Diploma – 4 mandatory units + 6 optional
  • Each unit is 6 weeks in duration
  • Fundamental skills
  • Training and assessment
  • Reports at end of each unit for employer
  • Optional units such as Bench, Turning, Milling, Electrical Wiring and Testing, Mechanical Maintenance, MMA, MIG, TIG etc.
  • Level 3 Development Knowledge - BTEC 2-year course day release on a Tuesday
  • 3 different pathways (electrical, multiskilled or Mechanical)
  • Behaviours Monitored throughout in accordance with standard

Year 2:

  • Level 3 Development Knowledge – BTEC 2-year course day release on a Monday
  • Level 3 Development Competence Diploma (NVQ) in chosen pathway – work-based learning monthly assessor visits.
  • Behaviours Monitored throughout in accordance with standard

Year 3:

  • Level 3 Development Competence Diploma (NVQ) in chosen pathway – work-based learning 6-8-week assessor visits.
  • Behaviours Monitored throughout in accordance with standard

Year 4:

  • Level 3 Development Competence Diploma (NVQ) in chosen pathway – work-based learning 6-8week assessor visits
  • Behaviours Monitored throughout in accordance with standard
  • Preparation & complete End Point Assessment

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
  • Upon successful completion of their apprenticeship, the candidate will be a time-served toolmaker with excellent career prospects to progress in this field or to develop skills in other engineering arenas such as design using CAD systems, or engineering management.

  • GCSE or equivalent English, Maths and Science (Grade Grade 6 and above) essential
