Job overview

The Vocational Support Worker will provide assessment and support to individuals with severe and enduring mental problems who are interested in accessing a range of vocational activities including: voluntary work, work based placements and higher and further education. The service also supports individuals with severe and enduring mental health problems to retain existing vocational activities/employment; this is generally referred to as job retention. The role will also support service users in gaining skills and experiences by facilitating groups or accessing other meaningful activity.

The Vocational Support Worker will work within the Recovery Teams who are part of Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership Trust. The Vocational Support Worker will work alongside a service users identified care co-ordinator as part of the Care Programme Approach (CPA). In some clinically indicated circumstances the vocational worker may be required to take on the role of care co-ordinator.



Main duties of the job

As part of this process the Vocational Support Worker will develop partnerships with all relevant parties, these can include: Care Co-ordinator, Community Mental Health Team, employers, colleges, universities and employment services and voluntary sector agencies, participating in groups and projects as agreed with the relevant managers.

The post holder must be an excellent communicator with an eye for detail. He or she will be organised and confident about carrying their own caseload with supervision from the Vocational Lead and/or Team Manager. They must be adaptable, with the ability to get on well with a variety of people at all levels in different organisations.

The job will require a 'can do' attitude to present a positive image of service users to the external world of industry, ensuring that sufficient support is in place to make each job/placement a success. It should be noted that a key part of this role is to help facilitate groups - in particular an allotment group - and therefore an interest in or knowledge of gardening or horticulture would be highly desirable.
