As a Gardener for the National Trust, you'll be a hands-on member of the garden team, involved in every aspect of gardening at The Weir. Responsible for day-to-day maintenance, and the highest standards of horticulture, you'll also play a vital role in improving the experience of visitors to the garden and wider estate.
You may be asked to work occasional weekends, bank holidays and evenings.
Working alongside a Senior Gardener, an Assistant Gardener and a team of dedicated volunteers you'll oversee the future improvement of several areas of the garden including overseeing new projects in our Kitchen Garden.
Set above the River Wye, with breathtaking views across the Black Mountains, the Weir Garden is a beautiful example of a 1920's garden. Sketched by Humphrey Repton in 1799, you'll be working in a garden where balancing Horticulture and Ecology is at the heart of this riverside garden. The Weir Garden is horticulturally eclectic as it is historically significant.
You'll be helping to keep the garden in tiptop condition every day. This might involve daily checks to make sure all areas are safe for people visiting, tasks such as weeding, pruning and mulching, and using machinery such as hedge cutters, leaf blowers, lawnmowers and tractors.
You'll be responsible for maintaining and developing the varied horticultural areas in the garden. These range from Woodland Gardens, a significant 1930's Rockery, topiary and a productive Kitchen Garden and the spring bulbs for which the garden is most well-known. You'll also be responsible for helping with excellent communication of our work, ensuring that everyone feels welcome.
Other duties include propagation, preparing plants for sale, tree safety work and garden design and restoration . You'll be involved in recycling and managing waste, composting, along with the rest of the garden team.
We'd love to hear from you if you're:
- an enthusiastic horticulturist and hands-on gardener, who's worked with hard landscaping before
- knowledgeable about plants, with a great eye for detail.
- experienced with machinery, including tractors, chainsaws, rotary and cylinder mowers, and with some knowledge of maintenance
- a driver with a full licence
- able to manage a demanding outdoor role
- good at talking to, and getting on with, all kinds of people
- equally confident working within a team, with volunteers or on your own
- able to keep to time, plan and meet deadlines
