British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for a Scientist - Novel Scientific Capabilities and Foresights in Southampton

The role of the Scientific Foresights arm within Novel Scientific Capabilities and Foresights (Science Discovery, R&D) is to lead scientific foresight acquisition focused upon the identification, and subsequent evaluation, of potential scientific threats or opportunities to both our nicotine and beyond nicotine portfolios. Following initial technical feasibility assessment, findings should be communicated to the R&D Leadership Team and broader stakeholder groups in a timely manner.

The primary sources of foresight monitoring include scientific publications, conferences, clinical trials, and IP. The successful candidate will help the team in maintaining an awareness and overview of any developments in these sources. Once a potential opportunity or threat has been identified, proof-of-concept (POC) investigations may need to be completed to determine initial technical feasibility. Depending upon the foresight, such investigations required can range from in silico, in vitro and, where appropriate, human studies to screen and evaluate. Alternatively, investigations can be run as accelerator projects with external partners (such as technology start-ups) using agile methodologies. All such investigations are often managed in close collaboration with the Capabilities arm of the Novel Scientific Capabilities and Foresights team or indeed wider R&D stakeholders.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Technical leadership across categories
  • Ability to translate technical trends into proof-of-concept investigations that allow for initial technical feasibility assessment.
  • Study design and execution (with collaborator assistance)
  • Data interpretation, reporting and communication.
  • Publication authorship, patent filing and conference presentation

What are we looking for?

  • Publication tracking, competitor analysis, IP landscaping and clinical trial monitoring
  • Experience in study design and execution, managing research programmes to deliver projects to timelines with appropriate budgetary governance.
  • Proven track record of oral and written communication skills, including external presentations and technical reports/ SOPs for internal use.
  • Critical thinking in data interpretation in order to provide strong conclusions and recommendations
  • Proven skills at scientific communication to technical and non-technical, internal and external audiences
  • Strong collaborative engagement, identification of external collaborations that can strengthen the scientific agenda.
  • Minimally a BSc in a life science or relevant subject.

BENEFICIAL

  • Experience in setting up and running In Silico, In Vitro or human studies.Proven track record of working across functions with multiple stakeholders.
