Thorn SDS is a niche Managed Service Provider, based in Alton, Hampshire, who are committed to enabling technology organisations and professionals to thrive within the Space, Defence and Security sectors.

We are currently recruiting an experienced Project Engineer to join our client’s team working on a critical initiative aimed at equipping operators with sophisticated, modern communication capabilities.


Role Overview:

As the Project Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in delivering robust engineering solutions and ensuring project quality for a secure communications system. Working within a multi-disciplinary team, you’ll collaborate with experts across engineering, safety, and project management to deliver a groundbreaking solution.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and ongoing management of essential engineering documents, including Engineering Management Plans (EMP), GEAR Review Reports, and related artefacts.
  • Oversee requirements management, acceptance processes, and final delivery assurance, producing key reports like the Validation and Verification Requirements Matrix (VVRM) and Acceptance Case Report.
  • Contribute to equipment safety planning, including hazard identification and safety case documentation to ensure compliance with all safety standards.
  • Create and update system configuration baselines through documentation like the System Definition Document and Level 1 Architecture Model.
  • Develop and validate technical requirements for project components managed by third-party contractors.
  • Engage in the selection, evaluation, and performance testing of technical systems within the project scope, ensuring they meet standards.


Required Skills and Experience:

  • Prior experience with Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) projects
  • Proven experience in modern communications systems, with the ability to provide clear technical direction and ensure successful engineering deliverables.
  • Chartered status or equivalent experience, with membership in a recognised professional engineering or science institute.
  • Qualification in a relevant field, or equivalent experience in an engineering or technical discipline.
  • Demonstrated track record in providing technical guidance and achieving successful project outcomes.
  • Relevant technical experience in a UK military context
