Seeking a Systems Engineer with Linux experience.


We are working with a leading IT solutions and satellite communications organization with an exciting opportunity for an IT Systems Engineer with Linux experience to join their Enterprise Engineering team.


Hybrid working - 3 days in the offices based in Merstham/ Redhill, Surrey with some travel to client sites for meetings - UK and possibly international.


You must be eligible for UK SC-level clearance for this role - min 5 years UK referenceable history


In this role you will assist with the systems engineering, design and development within the team. Using bespoke and open-source software, primarily Linux based to bring additional value to in-house and customer solutions.


Key responsibilities within the team include:

  • Bespoke hardware/ software developments to enable customers to better manage site traffic and user experience
  • Meeting with customers to design on-board vessel and land networks for fleets and remote sites, bespoke designs, virtualization, high availability, traffic prioritization, integration & ongoing support
  • Off the shelf products/ developing in-house products/ system design and integration, testing/ evaluating, updates/ releases
  • Design & management of the organizations global VSAT, Starlink, OneWeb, LTE & POP Infrastructure and networks, including requirements capture, traffic shaping, traffic acceleration, VOIP and systems management.


You will be involved in developing and maintaining a range of solutions/ products including: VOIP platforms, email services, file replication, hotspot solutions, software distribution, web filtering, firewalling, virtualization, high availability and video entertainment services.


Key responsibilities will include:

  • Act as in-house Product expert on selected systems and application, keeping abreast of new developments in the IT & Communications industry of key relevance.
  • Provide accurate and timely technical information or analyses on a variety of engineering investigations.
  • As part of a team support the design, requirement capture and development of the suite of the organizations value added services.
  • Produce and maintain detailed technical documentation relating to the new solutions/developments. Work with Product Management team on ensuring new developments are rolled out effectively across the organization.
  • Support the Product Management team and / or Account Managers in dealings with customers on engineering issues, attend meetings and conduct demonstrations in support of Sales.
  • Own, investigate and resolve escalated engineering service issues.
  • If required to participate in a DVB Support Engineer shift rota
  • Lead by example to develop and maintain personal technical expertise in company bespoke products and security best practise.


Key skills and experience required:

Qualifications:

  • Degree (2:1) or HND/HNC in IT/Programming/Engineering related area AND/OR at least 3 years equivalent experience


Essential:

  • TCP/IP networking concepts including Routing, Switching, Firewalling, including Layer 7 firewalls
  • Linux (CentOS/Ubuntu, Apache, MySQL)
  • Some level of scripting/ programming capability/ keen interest in this area (e.g. Bash/ Perl/ etc)
  • A professional and flexible approach
  • Proactive "can do" attitude
  • Analytical mindset
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, and independently on your own projects
  • Ability to diagnose complex faults, document, communicate and follow up corrective actions


Desirable:

  • Project planning and delivery experience
  • Asterisk/VoIP platforms
  • Windows Server and VMware intermediate-level experience
  • Hardware and/or software systems development and design experience
  • Programming knowledge - Scripting (Bash, Perl)
  • Working knowledge of satellite networks and infrastructure, firewalls and traffic shaping experience.
