NatPower is a global group specialised in renewable energy assets development, with operations in several countries. We are launching in the UK market, aiming at becoming one of the UK sector leaders in the next 3-5 years as we successfully have in other geographies. We will also be expanding into new markets and there will be opportunities to contribute to this expansion and increase responsibilities and experience across different geographies.

The Role


We are looking to hire an Energy Trading Director, with the ability to be home based, to join our team to take ownership of and drive forward:


  1. our portfolio trading strategy
  2. set up internal trading desk
  3. set up and lead internal trading team


for the largest battery storage portfolio in the UK which will also include the intra-trading of solar and wind generation.


You and your team will be the market leaders in optimising and trading the largest electricity storage assets and portfolio in the country. There will be multiple BESS assets, each with a 4GWh capacity.


You will be the company’s go to expert on the UK energy trading market, keeping up to date on all aspects impacting pricing and government, statutory and counterparty policy and be responsible for revenue forecasting.


You will develop the route to market for our assets and oversee the development and integration of smart energy trading software. You will support the negotiation of PPAs and tolling agreements with sophisticated characteristics.

Key responsibilities:

The Energy Trading Director will grow and lead the Energy Market Analysis and Trading Team.

You will:


  • Support the NatPower UK Development Director and team in the strategic development of large scale storage and renewables projects across the UK (initial focus is on stand-alone utility scale battery storage and large scale co-located solar and battery with onshore wind projects within the next 24 months).
  • Be directly responsible for all energy market analysis and contribute to the financial modelling of each project including updating the Board on changes in the UK energy market and advising on the likely energy market future outlook as a result of in depth market analysis, including identification of future market opportunities.
  • Support our internal Financial Modelling Team in modelling revenues of the projects, creating sophisticated models based on hard data about energy trading, modelling scenarios for changes to specific assumptions, deriving the financial viability of projects from initial project appraisal all the way through to operations.
  • Support the NatPower UK Investment Director in engagements with third parties for asset and portfolio valuations.
  • Be instrumental in the set-up of the internal energy trading platform.
  • Develop the trading strategy for both individual assets and the portfolio.
  • Establish and manage the internal trading team and ensure asset trading optimisation across the generation and storage portfolio.
  • Exploit the use of mathematical programming techniques and machine learning to optimise different aspects of the storage and generation business.
  • Contribute to contract negotiations for supply, demand and tolling agreements across the portfolio.



What we are looking for:


  • Experience of energy trading markets, with a strong understanding of one of the following markets essential: UK Power Energy Trading, UK Renewable Energy & Trading (alter and change to suit)
  • Track record of end-to-end project lifecycle, particularly in Agile project delivery. (alter to suit Nat Power Systems)
  • Experience in shaping processes and solutions, including capturing business problems, value drivers, and functional/ non-functional requirements.
  • A working knowledge of trade lifecycle across different trading instruments, including:
  • Physical trading and operations
  • OTC - Including forwards, swaps, and simple options
  • Exchange traded futures & options
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, (business, finance, environmental science, mechanical engineering, or chemical engineering)
  • A master's degree, such as a Master of Business Administration (MBA) would be desirable
  • Industry experience, a minimum of 3-5 years
  • Knowledge of energy production and financial trading
  • Understanding of trading practices and energy trading markets
  • Up-to-date knowledge of news and research in the field
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Experience with trading techniques and products
  • Leadership experience
  • Strong consulting experience
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • Hands-on configuration experience of ETRM/ CTRM applications or equivalent
