ABOUT PRODUCT GROUP
The BBC Studios Product Group is responsible for the design, development, and delivery of the Studios portfolio of products - direct-to-consumer, business-to-business and enabling.
Our portfolio is diverse but is fully focused on supporting our functions and businesses around the globe whether that be back-office functions, content production or direct to consumer offerings. We are a growing function and will provide an important contribution to the business growth targets over the coming years.
Core to that growth will be the launching and / or growth of new or enhanced digital products into the market to monetize our content offering. You will be joining the team as a key member for the direction and delivery of one of our products - BBC Player - that is subject to ambitious growth plans.
THE ROLE
The Head of Engineering is a pivotal role charged with transforming the Product Vision into tangible technological deliveries. Closely collaborating with the VP of Product and senior leaders this position is essential in delivering the technology that powers business and consumer digital products worldwide. The role encompasses the entire spectrum of software and product development lifecycles to seamlessly blending technical goals with business objectives. Central to this position is the drive to foster a culture of engineering excellence powering the growth and success of BBC Studios.

• Lead and manage the engineering function, setting a clear vision and strategy that aligns with the overall goals of the Studios Product Group and recognises secret source.
• Respond to customer needs across the spectrum of engineering disciplines to deliver solutions that directly enhance user experience and address specific problems.
• Manage the engineering budget as a business within a business, making smart value for money decisions on build vs. buy, outsourcing vs. insourcing, and nurturing strategic partnerships.
• Foster effective communication and collaboration within the engineering teams and across departments, ensuring alignment with wider vision and objectives.
• Cultivate a positive, dynamic, and productive work environment, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and high performance.
• Evaluate and optimise organisation within the engineering department, identifying current and future skill gaps and facilitating professional development and training.
• Drive operational excellence, streamlining processes and systems to enhance efficiency, meet deadlines, and successfully implement initiatives.
• Act as a technical subject-matter expert providing guidance and making strategic choice on complex projects, and product initiatives.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE? (Minimum criteria)

• Strong leadership and management abilities with a proven track record of motivating and mentoring large multidisciplined teams.
• Excellent relationship-building skills with the ability to foster collaboration across engineering and non-engineering departments thereby ensuring alignment with the company's vision and objectives.
• Expertise in organising, managing, and directing complex projects across multiple technical domains.
• Adept in strategic planning and problem-solving, with an ability to think critically under pressure.
• Strong prioritisation skills, with a focus on delivering impactful results and meeting key deadlines.
• Breadth of engineering skills grounded in established principles with the ability to leverage emergent methodologies and technologies for customer and company benefit.
• Track record of driving operational excellence to deliver results and capability within set timelines and budgets.

• Salary: Up to £130k + Bonus depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

• Location: Television Centre, London. Flexible/Hybrid
