Role Purpose

At Travelex we are developing modern data services, which will be at the heart of our relationship with our customers. Our data architecture is becoming more service-oriented and more real-time – which creates a range of engineering problems for you to solve. Our work is fast-paced although our team remains collaborative and flexible even when delivering fast.nYour role as data engineer has a wide remit: working with product owners, subject matter experts and managers across the company, to design and deliver new components of our data landscape. You will have an end-to-end responsibility for your deliverables: from leading the work to agree the right approach, through coding, configuration and documentation, all the way to going live. In this process you will have significant impact on the way our business evolves, and a high level of freedom to do things in your own way.

Responsibilities

Here are key things you’ll do as a data engineer in our team. The list isn’t complete: as a competent engineer, you’ll bring to Travelex your own ideas of what else is needed to become a world-class data-driven business.

Develop code, scripts and configurations as part of the development of data pipelines, data services and data transformations.nDefine data solutions, and lead all activities required when agreeing the best design (analysis, engagement, documentation).nTake initiative to investigate whatever needs clarification during design or development.nLearn what’s required from your solutions and negotiate the requirements to achieve clarity and simplicity.nLearn about features, capabilities and settings of the technologies used in order to build the best solution.nBrainstorm your engineering approach continuously with colleagues and partners.nRecommend development priorities, explain pros and cons of different options, and reach agreement on the next steps if needed.nRecommend and implements steps to test and secure your data solutions.

Key Requirements

This vacancy is for someone who enjoys mixing hands-on coding with wider problem-solving and continuous learning. Below are key requirements from our data engineer,

but you don’t need to tick every box. Success in our team is not limited to the traditional data engineering type

Significant hands-on experience with AWS, especially AWS services focused on data flow, pipelines, data transformation, storage and streaming.nExcellent data engineering skills, for example with SQL, Python, DBT and Airflow.nGood understanding of service-oriented architecture; experience of exposing and consuming data via APIs, streams and webhooks.nConfidence in coding, scripting, configuring, versioning, debugging, testing and deploying.nGood understanding of security best practices, and experience of implementing them.nUnderstanding of compliance and regulation, for example by PCI and FCA.nThe ability to learn new tools, languages and methods quickly.nThe ability to explain, brainstorm, present, simplify, clarify, prioritise, document, listen, negotiate and compromise.nThe curiosity to understand the business, its requirements and culture.nYour own unique style or way of working, which will make our team diverse and original.
