In addition to providing first aid services, the charity also runs a number of projects aimed at building strong and safer communities in Scotland. With the Scottish Government they aim to equip 500,000 people with CPR skills, increasing the number of bystanders to help in an emergency thereby increasing the number of survivors.”

The Role

As Volunteer Training Officer, you will be responsible for for the delivery and/or assessment of all Association first aid and related courses for volunteers, as well as for developing and maintaining volunteer training infrastructure within the organisation.

Reporting to the Volunteer Development Manager, your main responsibilities will include:

●       To deliver training courses and conduct assessments to a consistent and fair standard in accordance with St Andrew’s First Aid requirements.

●       To maintain current competence and continuous personal development, in accordance with the St Andrew’s First Aid National Headquarters Training Department requirements.

●       To act as a point of contact for first aid advice.

●       To assist in the planning, coordination and delivery of activities and training involving volunteers

●       Promote positive and productive working relationships between volunteers, staff and other stakeholders

●       To develop and maintain volunteer training infrastructure including volunteer trainer/assessor recruitment and development

In addition to the duties highlighted, the organisation operates a flexible approach to its activities and the post holder may accordingly be called upon to undertake any other duties from time to time as circumstances warrant. 

An element of unsocial hours will be required to be undertaken.

Requirements

The individual will have experience in the planning, co-ordination, delivery and

assessment of large volumes of first aid courses. The person should also be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office.

This role would best suit an individual with a passion for and experience of volunteering or working in the third sector, or any other relevant experience.

The ideal person will be very people-orientated, pro-active and flexible. You’ll be outgoing, friendly with good communication skills and be able to fit in wherever the job takes you.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  5. To work with permanent staff, casual workers, and volunteers to maintain a high standard of training and assessing.
  6. Accurate completion and prompt submission of all relevant course documentation.
  7. To work within St Andrew’s First Aid health and safety, training and other policies and procedures as implemented within the organisation.
  8. To pilot new initiatives in training when required.
  9. To act as a point of contact for first aid advice.
  10. To maintain a high standard of training and delivery equipment. Report any faults or damage to equipment through the required processes when they occur.
  11. To ensure that all equipment used is cleaned and stored in accordance with procedures.
  12. To be responsible for custody, maintenance, and transport of personal equipment.
  13. To assist in the planning, coordination and delivery of activities and training involving volunteers
  14. Promote positive and productive working relationships between volunteers, staff and other stakeholders
  15. To develop and maintain volunteer training infrastructure including volunteer trainer/assessor recruitment and development
  16. To perform any other duties commensurate with these responsibilities, the grade of the post and skill and qualifications of the post-holder, and from time-to-time, the reasonable requirements of the Head of Commercial Training.   
  17. To represent the organisation as appropriate at meetings of relevant external stakeholders/organisations/partners.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Standard Grades in English and arithmetic.
  • Nationally recognised training qualification.
  • Relevant valid course specific qualification, e.g. HSE Approved First Aid at Work
  • Recognised Assessor Award.

SPECIALIST SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Experience of working in a customer focussed environment.
  • Ability to work on own initiative, as part of a team and under direction from Line Manager.
  • Ability to communicate with colleagues, volunteers and customers effectively.
  • Proven experience of delivering first aid and/or health and safety courses.

PERSONAL QUALITIES

Essential

  • Willingness to adapt and learn new skills.
  • Car owner and driver with insurance to cover business use (mileage paid) OR Have access to public or private transport to meet role mobility requirements.
  • Willingness to be flexible to meet the needs of the project in hand and a willingness to travel throughout Scotland.
  • Smart professional appearance and a willingness to wear corporate dress.
  • Clear PVG check.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Friendly, outgoing nature.
  • Ability to motivate volunteers.
  • Self-motivated, able to work under own initiative to deadlines, and to deal with a broad range of issues.
