Job summary:

In DHSC, we are proud of our purpose - to enable everyone to live more independent, healthier lives for longer.

To achieve this, and create a great place to work, we have four values:
we are inclusive, we constantly improve, we challenge, and we are agile. If this sounds like an environment you'd like to work in, we'd love to hear from you.

The Cancer Policy and Performance team is part of the broader Electives and Cancer Directorate.

The team works closely with NHS England to ensure delivery of our targets in the elective recovery delivery plan and to optimise patient pathways.

Cancer is a priority for the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care and has a high profile in the health sector more generally, attracting a broad variety of passionate stakeholders.

Cancer is one of 6 health conditions within the Department's Major Conditions Strategy and is at the forefront of NHS research and innovation.

The team attracts high profile commissions and correspondence, with the opportunity to brief ministers and senior officials on a regular basis.

Job description:

Person specification:

Role responsibilities

We have three Policy and Performance support roles available, working across the policy and performance teams within the Cancer Policy and Performance Branch.

The team interacts with the large number of cancer charities who campaign on behalf of patients and their families, supports ministers to respond to concerns and to improve the experiences of patients with cancer.

Radiotherapy provision and children's cancer services are particularly high on the agenda at the moment.

Cancer is one of the six conditions covered in the Major Conditions Strategy. The Strategy will take forward improvements to the prevention, screening, early diagnosis and holistic care for cancer patients. Given its strategic importance to the Department, there will be opportunities for successful applicants to support this work.

  • Work with departmental colleagues, NHS England and a range of other stakeholders to understand, manage and develop cancer policy, ensuring alignment with wider health policy including electives, diagnostics and screening.
  • Leading on briefing and support across the cancer policy and performance portfolio.
  • Deep dives and stocktakes to further our understanding of the barriers and enablers of improving cancer performance.

Key skills and experience required for the role

  • Manage their own workload, including competing work priorities and being able to make progress independently (with appropriate support) or as part of a team.
  • Confidentially use data to support your work both quantitative and qualitative data, and building a strong relationship with analytical colleagues.
  • Utilise stakeholder and communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Work effectively as part of a wider team, and understand how your work and the work of your team supports wider objectives.
  • Produce effective, clear and concise briefing and correspondence for use within the department and externally.
